Red shirts becoming...well, sorta' pink shirts? - Redrum - 01-11-2018

It's published in Alabama but reports unanimity among coaches (presumably nationwide) for letting red-shirting football players to play up to four games during their redshirt season.  Hadn't heard of this at all.  Sounds fishy to me, but practically anything coming from organized football coaching-dom does.  I presume all coaches fight for every possible advantage on and off the field and this feels like a way to get 5 yrs of a player out of 4 previously allowed.  But I'll listen to any other  opinions.  Of course, in Alabama, they're in favor of middle schoolers being eligible for college ball if they would provide some advantage on game day.

This has been proposed before and bet it passes

My guess is that in SEC country the coaches will want to use redshirt freshmen in those FCS and very weak non-conference FBS home games.  This way they can see them play in junk time and protect their key players from injury or targeting suspensions.  I am particularly thinking about those mid-November FCS games they all play prior to their rivalry game.

It would actually be nice if those redshirt freshmen could play in any post-season games.  The inclusion of redshirt freshmen in various bowl games would add some excitement and interest, and would be a nice option for the players.

I agree. If most bowl games are "meaningless exhibition" games as people seem to think of them these days, it makes sense to allow redshirts to play. Good preparation for next year.

I thought pink shirting was repeating a year in usually 8th grade so you could be a bigger for sports vs your peer group

While there is no known or reliable data on the new trend, coaches and recruiting analysts say more young athletes across the nation are "redshirting," or repeating a grade before high school to gain athletic advantage. Although not every decision is made with athletics in mind, experts say the extra year often helps players excel in sports and eventually earn college scholarships. In most recent cases, players have repeated the eighth grade, while others have been held back by their parents before starting school or have spent an extra year in kindergarten.

Nothing the NCAA could do would make more sense than allowing True Frosh football players to play three regular season games and a bowl game, without losing a year of eligibility.

Some guys may not play at all the first three games, but could well play in the bowl games after bowl practices. Sure would have been fun to see Dalyn Wade-Perry and Osiris St. Brown against TCU.

Surprised.  With the move to go pro earlier and earlier, redshirts are becoming less and less relevant for top teams.

This could have an effect on all-time records as some players will get an extra 3/4 games to accumulate stats.

As it is, few all-time records are from pre 12-game schedules.

For the historians and statisticians in the group:
Can anybody let me know the progression in the no of games / season across the years?

Is a 10 win season still elite?
