David Shaw receives Dodd Trophy - 82lsju - 12-31-2017
David Shaw was named recipient of the Dodd Trophy on Saturday, as announced by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation.
This is Stanford's third all-time national coach of the year award, following Chuck Taylor (1951) and Clark Shaughnessy (1940) each winning the AFCA Coach of the Year Award.

Congrats to Coach Shaw.
A snippet from the article...
"In the community, Shaw represents the Pac-12 on the AFCA Ethics Committee and is one of 18 individuals named to USA Football's newly created Football Advisory Committee. Last year, he was the only head football coach named to the NCAA Commission to Combat Campus Sexual Violence. In addition to his work with the commission, Shaw has been a leading advocate of the Set The Expectation program, aimed at working to end the culture of sexual assault and domestic violence among college and high school athletes. Stanford players became the first university in the country to sign the Set The Expectation student pledge, stating they would use their platforms to speak out against sexual assault and violence against women."
Unlike the H Award, this award seems to seriously consider integrity and promoting academics. Coach wouldn't have deserved to win this year if this was purely about success on the field, but when taking the other factors into account, I'm surprised it took this long for him to be recognized. As another article recently said...David Shaw and Stanford are the best coach/university marriage in the country.

Glad that the award committee considers integrity. Probably just a coincidence that no Noter Dame coach has ever won it... :P And good for the NCAA overlooking the fact that Dodd was named after Confederate General Robert E. Lee. and instead focused on the fact that he was an education-oriented coach and understood motivational psychology, game strategy and game planning. He frequently won despite being outmanned on the field.
And I am very, very glad that Shaw won. I know Eddie Robinson from Grambling won in 1992, was Shaw the first African American coach to win the award from the FBS division?

Congratulations to Coach Shaw. Me we be as fortunate with him as Tech was with Coach Dodd. Stadium name fortunate.
