Re: Jim Tressel resigns - yvonne - 05-30-2011

Quote:"After meeting with university officials, we agreed that it is in the best interest of Ohio State that I resign as head football coach," Tressel said in a statement released by the university. "The appreciation that (wife) Ellen and I have for the Buckeye Nation is immeasurable."

Pushed. Did not jump.

This is gonna be F-U-N - Redrum - 05-30-2011

On one hand,  the NCAA has just pimp-slapped USC for violations.  On the face of it, the NCAA can hardly do less to Ohio St.

On the other hand,  OSU has two things USC didn\'t have.  First, demonstrable evidence that the school had been kept in the dark (  now it appears the active-voice "lied to" is appropriate)  by the coach.   Second, it fired the lying bastard no matter what word they use to describe his departure.

But I don\'t see how the NCAA can\'t act punitively.  To fail to do so would indicate that all a coach had to do was decrease candor and communication  and the school  decrease oversight and control and the willing, artificial ignorance of violations would become a defense for wrongdoing.   It seems the only way to maintain order (if not consistency)  is to hold the school responsible regardless.

Too bad the wreckage is still flaming and will be too hot to examine closely for a while.   Gotta wonder what OSU found or figured out that would cause them to meet with a coach one day and have his "resignation" the next.

Sports Illustrated is publishing an investigative story on Jim Tressel tonight sometime.

Re: Jim Tressel resigns - CowboyIndian - 05-30-2011

It does sound like fun....for US! Sports talk is rife with rumors that SI is coming out with a really ugly story, news of which necessitated Tressel\'s departure. He flew home from vacation in Florida to resign. Hmmmmm.

Awww, the weather\'s crap in Fla. now anyway - Redrum - 05-30-2011

Hot, humid, humid, humid.  Bugs biting.  Sort of like being gradually bled to death by the investigation.  Might as well go back to Ohio and take the heat and blood-letting.

Pretty close in Ohio, though...like 2000. The rest of it looks like Carter\'s running again.

Re: Jim Tressel resigns - Pastor - 05-30-2011

A serious question.  Is it possible in today\'s environment to have a consistently high-rated college football program that is not dirty?

Possible, not easy.
