Pac-12 Championship Predictions - BostonCard - 11-27-2017

Hi all....

Stanford hasn't given up more than 24 points since September, even on the road.  Love, Costello and play action will be too much for Trojans.

Don Best shows USC lost 4 defensive linemen and 4 defensive backs for the year, over the course of the season (they had even more losses before the Wazoo game).

I didn’t look up the individual names to see how key each defender was, but the SC defense we face Friday doesn’t seem like it’ll be the same we faced earlier. As I’d expect for a team with a depleted d line,  physical teams like Utah — which doesn’t have nearly as much offensive firepower as us — and Notre Dame scored a lot.

I’ll predict a 35-28 win, assuming Bryce is reasonably healthy. We can win by even more if we can ever get to Darnold, or if KJ plays anything like he played Saturday. I expect that the score will be that low only because Stanford has been very successful lately grinding 6-8 minute drives. In terms of match-ups, I think we could score an awful lot if we had to.

In 5 games in August/September, USC gave up an average of 389 yards per game, 5.3 yards per play, and 25.8 points per game
In 4 games in October, USC gave up an average of 402 yards per game, 6.1 yards per play, and 25.8 points per game
In 3 games in November, USC gave up an average of 456 yards per game, 5.7 yards per play, and 27.3 points per game

The trend is towards a somewhat more vulnerable defense over time, but the difference isn't as big as you might have expected.  Numbers above are not adjusted for opponent.

Stanford needs their defense to step up to win this one - pressure on Darnold, minimize long runs and getting a good game from our secondary. 

A decent defensive performance should be enough for a win.  If we go +3 on turnovers as we did against Notre Dame it will be a comfortable one.

The real color Cardinal and White - 37
The maroon color Cardinal and Gold - 31

Interestingly, both teams use the official color, PMS 201c as their official Cardinal color.  Stanford rightly calls it Cardinal Red and Southern Cal pompously calls it USC Cardinal.
