Injury report -
Spiny_Norman - 11-21-2017
From the David Shaw presser (as reported by RJ Abeytia)
Schultz and Wedington will be back this Saturday.
Little is doubtful
Love is day-to-day. Shaw - "Not as good as we'd like it to be."
Also Shaw went off on Reid not selected as a Thorpe Award finalist - "Call it East Coast Bias, call it Stanford bias...It's RIDICULOUS"
Re: Injury report -

Also, some nice comments on Mills:
"He can throw the ball. It's natural to him."
"The ball gets there quick, but it's easy to catch."
Also, asked about whether Weddington was a running back or wide receiver in the future, Shaw answered "Yup."
Weddington, our next McCaffrey?

I have been thinking that for awhile, but several other program watchers have suggested to me that once we run out of Love we are more likely going to be featuring the next Toby in Sione Lund.
The coaches have been letting loose some plaudits for Mills. Those sound like more than the usual "our frosh are doing great" throw away lines. Next year's QB situation will be interesting again, hopefully this time with less negative connotation for that word.

If Bryce Love does stay, then we are going to have a big stable of running backs to pick from, all of which bring different skills (to some extent) to the table. Even if Love leaves, we will have at least three guys who are legitimate threats. It could be real interesting. We may see many more two back sets.

Shaw gave a fair amount of detail about Loves injury. He confirmed it is a sprained ankle, and it sounds like as long as the pain is bearable, he will play. Shaw said that unlike other injuries, they arent too concerned about causing long-term damage due to the nature of it.

Through no fault of their own, I have a feeling that whoever replaces Bryce Love when he leaves is going to look pretty pedestrian after McCaffrey then Love. Our fan calibration is way off wrt expectations, that's unavoidable with two Voldemort worthy tailbacks in a row.
I don't think we'd be very impressed with Gaffney or Taylor right now if they were the backups.

I don't really know anything about Lund, so I looked him up. The dude is 6-1 and 254 according to GoStanford. If that's true, are you sure he's not being moved to LB? That's freakin' brobdingnagian.

Time for another 2-way guy. Marecic was one of my all-time favorites. I had the pleasure of being in the stands when he scored those back-to-back TDs. And watching him and deCastro lead Toby through the hole was Beef Ball at its finest.

I dont know about that. Toby, Taylor, and Gaffney didnt have the explosiveness or elusiveness of Love, but they always fell forward, had good vision and you almost never felt like they left yards on the field. On the contrary, they often turned ugly blocking into 3-4 yard gains and almost never lost yards. Compared to Speights and Scarlett right now ( or Seale/wright after they left), their vision, timing, and ability to break tackles was much greater.
Of course Speights and Scarlett will hopefully be much better in a year or two. I remember being very frustrated watching Taylor as a freshman and being frustrated by his inability to break tackles or read the play well. Hopefully they will develop the same way, especially under he tutelage of one of the best RB coaches in the business. What a heist getting Gould was.

I've loved all our RB's in different ways, but there was nothing that compared to the security and confidence of knowing that Toby would get 3-5 yards seemingly every single time he carried the ball. Man, I loved that.

Tom Landry on Walt Garrison: "You can always count on him. If you need three yards he'll get you three yards. If you need five yards he'll get you three yards."

Stepfan Taylor is quite possibly the most under appreciated player in my years of watching Stanford football. He did everything well. In 2012 he and Ertz was the offense. He is Stanford s all-time leading rusher. If whoever replaces Love next year is as good as Taylor Ill be thrilled

I agree. If Taylor had not come immediately after Gerhart, we'd be talking about him as one of the best ever.

Always liked Walt Garrison....a Skoal-dipping bulldogger in the offseason.

It's a data point, but I think expected. Shaw has said many times that Love has played enough he doesn't really need to practice. I imagine that they don't want to make him any more sore than is absolutely necessary!
Re: Injury report -

Fun fact (h/t to @TheBootleg):
We've had four defenders start every game this year:
Justin Reid
Harrison Phillips
Quenton Meeks
Eric Cotton
Meeks, Reid and Phillips (along with Okereke) have been the most important players on defense for us.

+2. Submarining for the extra yard or two, pass blocking, finding the open space on a screen pass, etc. Taylor was a skilled football player.
Speights will not get the career snaps of Taylor but I have fairly high expectations that he will show comparable skills and athleticism.
