OT Jake Browning - lex24 - 11-19-2017

Man did he make some throws down the stretch.  Fantastic performance. Hoping he repeats it next week

10 points for Uw in the last minute of the game.  And they don’t even onside kick.  I don’t understand how Wittingham, ostensibly one of the great coaches in the Pac-12, not only doesn’t score with 58 seconds on the clock, he doesn’t even get a first down... and he uses up only 29 seconds (and that’s running it twice!)

Whittingham also called a time out when UW had the ball with about 30 seconds. I'm pretty certain UW was content to go into overtime. Instead, they drive down the field and kick the gamewinner.

Would love to hear more details about that timeout call. I was more than half asleep by that time. It seemed the ESPN announcers didn't have much of a problem with it, although I could be remembering the end of the 1st half.

Kragthorpe: Whittingham’s timeout costs Utes in tough loss to Washington

Quote: What’s clear is that Washington, out of timeouts, would have gone into overtime until Whittingham called his second timeout with 23 seconds left after the Huskies’ first-down run. Whittingham said he figured the Huskies may try to throw and end up having to punt.

Whitingham may be gone after this year - although I don’t know his contract status. His Nov record is abysmal. They blew chances to win the South in 14 through 16. Last year being the most egregious.

Just about anything may happen, but that seems highly unlikely to me.

Whittingham is 109-56 at Utah.
He is 10-1 in bowl games over 13 years.
He took them from a nice Group of 5 team to a usually competitive Power 5 team.
Going into the year it was widely acknowledged by people paying attention that Utah would have a tough time with tons of roster turnover (and I think 4 of 5 OL).
I haven't heard particularly strong rumblings out of Salt Lake City (but haven't been looking for them either).

A couple of years ago there were rumours that Whittingham might be ripe for taking another job as he was not getting along with the AD. Don't know if that has healed or not. If not, Whittingham could be gone on his own volition I suppose.
And I guess if not, the AD could be looking for an opportunity to dump Whittingham, but that would seem like a good way to lose your own job if the new guy doesn't come in as a star right away.

Re: OT Jake Browning - lex24 - 11-19-2017

Didn’t he change both coordinators after last year?  I know he brought in a new OC. When you change coordinators and get worse that is not dangerous from a job security standpoint b

He brought in Troy Taylor who schooled Browning to a national HS career TD pass record.

Utah has had something like 10 OCs over 10 years.
One set lasted for two years, but it was two guys as co-OC.

Thanks. I’m biased. I think he’s vastly overrated.

He may or may not be overrated but his job security at Utah is very strong, if he leaves any time soon it will be by choice and for a better situation.
