59ers bye week - yvonne - 11-13-2017

Anybody worried that Cal had a bye to prepare for Big Game? This is a streaky rivalry, but no streak has gone more than seven games.

Re: 59ers bye week - FarmBoy - 11-13-2017

I'm more worried about the heavy weight battle our guys endured than Cal having a bye. I hope Love, Reid and anyone else who was hurting Saturday morning is 100% back.

I haven't followed Cal much this year, but from teh BI boards I've read, sounds like they're pretty dinged up as well right now.

If (big if), we win the Pac12 championship, we'll have earned it. Slug fest with UW, Big Game rivalry, then host a national powerhouse, then play U'SC on 6 days when they've had a bye.

On that last one, others many not be aware. U'SC plays 12 games without a bye this year. Their reward will be two weeks to prep for the P12 CG.

And WSU gets bye before Apple Cup.

Re: Injuries - C.al has lost several starters this year to injury including leading tackler Devante Downs, Demetris Robertson and Tre Watson.  But all of those occurred earlier in the season.  C.al has played several games with the new starters.  Injuries should not be a new factor for them.

For Stanford, we will probably have to wait to learn the status of Walker Little, Terrence Alexander, Curtis Robinson (who missed the UW game) and of course Bryce Love.  But they do get one extra day for recovery and healing since Stanford played on Friday.

With an extra week to prepare, C.al may have time to install new wrinkles that they have not shown the entire season.  In fact, both teams are likely to pull out plays they have been saving just for a special game like the Big Game.  The players and the fans should be ready for anything.

Re: 59ers bye week - Hank 91 - 11-13-2017

It's really ridiculous that the Pac-12 can't figure out how to make a schedule. Someone will always have a bye, but don't you think all schools would vote for a policy that prevented byes leading up to the rivalry game? And what about teams playing a Friday night game after a Saturday road game? Several teams have had to do this. If television demands a Friday night game, why not make sure both teams were at home the week before, or maybe even coming off a Thursday night game? This is all so obvious. I can't imagine why the powers that be can't figure it out.

I find it mildly concerning, sure.

Re: 59ers bye week - jacketree - 11-13-2017

Rested and rusty.

Only thing that seems to matter much is Love's ankle really.

Not sure scheduling 12 games among 12 teams is quite as simplistic as some might think.  Particularly with demands from the likes of Notre Dame tossed in the mix.

Wilner weighs in on how to "fix" the problems

Re: 59ers bye week - lex24 - 11-13-2017

The Friday night games do put the road team at a disadvantage.

Re: 59ers bye week - Embo - 11-14-2017

I admit I hesitated in posting this, because it's old and anecdotal, but here goes.

In 1980, Stanford was a prohibitive favorite going into Big Game:
- Stanford was 6-4 and would be headed to the Peach Bowl with a win
- C.al was 2-8 and their head coach (Roger Theder) was expected to be fired soon after
- Stanford had big stars on offense:  Elway, Margerum, Nelson, Naber
- C.al's starting QB, Rich Campbell, was out with a broken leg, to be replaced by a QB who had thrown a handful of passes in his career

We know what happened.  The biggest upset at the time in the history of Big Game, 28-23.

Six years later, Stanford was an even more prohibitive favorite:
- Stanford at 7-2 had their invitation to a post season game, the Gator Bowl
- C.al was 1-9 and their head coach (Joe Kapp) had already been fired
- Stanford was loaded on offense with Paye, Muster, Jeff James
- C.als starting QB, Troy Taylor, was out, replaced by a QB who had thrown a handful of passes in his career

And yes, history repeated itself.  The team came out flat, and lost 17-11.  Probably the most disappointed in all the 45 Big Games I've witnessed in person.

And what else did these Big Games have in common?  Stanford had a bye the week before.  Does C.al have an advantage in being off?  You can take this for whatever it's worth.

Did we play Arizona in Japan 2 weeks before Big Game in 86?

Japan was the week after Big Game.

I specifically remember that because it was one of the few times in my life I had a comeback ready.  :)

After that miserable game I was walking down Frat Row in Berkeley when some asshat shouted out, "Have a nice drive home!" and I yelled, "How about wishing us a nice trip to Japan and the Gator Bowl while you're at it?"

(OK, I didn't say it was a GOOD comeback...)

+1 CC for good memory & anecdote

I think that was the worst game I attended in person.  :'(
