Updated Bryce-man Trophy odds -
North Woods - 10-08-2017
Love is the big mover up to second favorite. Barkley's odds diminished but not a ton despite low all purpose yards. Mayfield took a hit, no doubt due to their upset loss.
Current: Barkley 3-2 Love 7-2 Mayfield 4-1 Rudolph 8-1 Jackson 12-1 Darnold 15-1 Barrett 20-1 Browning & Falk 30-1
Prior week: Barkley 7-4 Mayfield 2-1 Jackson 8-1 Rudolph 10-1 Darnold 12-1 Love 15-1 Barrett 30-1 Falk 30-1 Browning 40-1
Scanning Twitter, there are a lot of comments along the lines of "Love is having the best season but Barkley should win it." Maddening... though not entirely unexpected.

Too bad you can't bet on 2nd place. i.e. "Place it on Lucky Dan." ;)

The rationale will always change. Some years it should go to the best NFL prospect (Barkley over Love). Some years it should go to the player with the best stats (RG3 over Luck). Some years it should go to the best player on the best team (Ingram over Gerhart, Henry over Mccafrey). All years it should go to someone from the south and/or east.

And it definitely should go to someone who doesn't come from Stanford. :-X

This is the absolute perfect explanation of Voldemort voting.

Help me with the math. Barkley was 7-4 last week, now 3-2 ( = 6-4). Seems that his odds have improved after a week inwhich he had negative yards at halftime. Do I understand right or is this just more evidence of my old age?

Youre right I had that part backwards. Even more surprising in light of that.
Wonder how much of that was based on others in field (e.g. Mayfield) taking a hit or bets made vs. assessment of his own performance?.
At the same time while many seem to have decided already with much of the season left, it seems there have been many others in years past who were considered clear favorites early on only to become yesterdays news as things progressed.

Yeah, I was wondering that too.

I think it is all a relative thing. Mayfield, Jackson, and Darnold all had bad games, so despite Barkeley's mediocre game, he improved in comparison. Worth noting that even Love's game was merely good, and his odds improved four-fold (15-1 to 7-2). It was hardly a game that I would have expected to vault him to second in the H-award odds; it's just he had a good game while others had bad games.

You guys don't get it. It's all about who ESPN is pimping. Performance doesn't matter and the bettors know it. And thus far, it's all Barkley, all the time. Big 10 and SEC helps buy the mouse cheese.

This will only get worse after Herbstreit's comments.

This is pretty much it. ESPN released their mid-season All-America team today. Predictably, the running backs are Barkley and Love. Equally predictably, they tab Barkley as the best player in the nation. They do mention that Love is having a nice season, but the main point is that Barkley "is getting the H.man love that he deserves."

Barkley's a good back. Probably the second best Voldemort candidate on his team, after their quarterback. Bryce Love, on the other hand, is simply electric. He's leading the nation in yards per carry at 10.51 ypc, a jaw-dropping 16% better than #2 in the country. Barkley's average of 6.36 ypc is pathetic, compared to Love's, more than 4 yards per carry less, over 39% yards per carry less. Bryce has almost 500 yards more than the next highest rushing total, almost 100 YARDS PER GAME more than the #2 back.
Frankly, I'm a little embarrassed for people who prefer Barkley over Love for the Voldemort.

And there is that part of the H trophy about it going to the player that also best exhibits....INTEGRITY in his actions. Like Manziel and Winston in recent years/sarc. To me those selections are more embarrassing than not staying up late to watch Stanford players. ( And yes I think Winston has recently got his act together, but in college, not so much). Meanwhile Bryce is using his college years to prepare to be a doctor.

At some point, you have to wonder if the award just isn't measuring what it purports to measure and whether it is worth according it as much hype as it gets.

Anyone notice on the Utah telecast how desperately the commentators were trying to tout that Love had finally met his match, that Utah's run defense was unbreakable, etc., etc. Then as soon as Love popped the TD, they jumped right back on the Love-train and were all about how no one can stop him and he's the greatest since Zeus, etc. I guess it's all about ratings. There IS a big story to tell, it's just a matter of finding it or making it up if needed.Â

No. I didn't notice that.

Yes, I noticed that too. In fact, I was wondering if they did the same thing to Barkely when he was struggling in his game. I didn't watch the Penn State game. Until Bryce broke his long run, they made the story of the game the fact that he was being bottled up by Utah.

That announcer shtick always makes me think of the DeNiro character in "The Natural" when he tells Hobbs that he will have a story whether Hobbs is a hero or a goat. Despicable.
