FB start times across Pac-12 -
winflop - 09-25-2017
Of all games played or presently scheduled across all 12 teams in the conference, 60% kick off after 5pm. Stanford is the most screwed with 7 games of 8 scheduled
Thanks Larry Scott for making the Pac-12 a regional conference through your god awful TV contract - not to mention your abject failure to get P12N on DirecTV which prevents tens of millions of viewers from seeing not only football but other sports as well.

FWIW - The 49ers WISH they could be NFL after dark. Apparently the 49ers organization had no idea that placing the majority of the seating on the sunny side would be problematic. The NFL has discovered that West Coast fans, especially those in California are low engagement types. The Chargers and Rams are having an impossible time filling stadiums. The Raiders have an excuse. And the 49ers can't find people willing to sit in the sun when the temp is above 75 degrees.
The best game time for Stanford is probably 4:30PM. Late enough to knock down the sun intensity, but early enough to end before it is too late in the evening. That said, I like 7PM over 1PM at this point. The sunny side is the empty side during day games. It is far easier to explain why fans are not in the stands at 11PM in the fourth quarter of a blowout, than why the fans are not in the stands at 1:45PM at the start of the 2nd quarter.
To DirecTV -
Those with DirecTV just don't value the Pac-12 in their lives. It is that simple. No way on the planet your passionate SEC fan would stay with any provider that did not carry the SEC channel(s). If Pac-12 fans cared about the Pac-12 schools they would have switched and DirecTV would have come begging. DirecTV's hunch/research/bet was that its West Coast customers would stay with them even without the Pac-12 Nets. They were right.
All of that noted, the Pac-12 Nets probably is a big win for Stanford. And more important to Stanford than any other school in the conference.
Stanford can promise all of the football recruits that all home games and conference games can be seen by their parents. (And parents will happily switch to Dish to watch their kids). And Olympic sport athletes get to be on TV far more than they would in any other conference. Those are helpful advantages for Stanford given its national recruiting and all-sport focus. The money would be nice, but unlike some other schools in the conference Stanford can survive without that incremental TV revenue. The Pac-12 Nets may not pay a lot of money, but they probably are an invaluable recruiting tool for Stanford athletics.
FWIW2 - The "other sports" are not viewed by casual fans. If the Pac-12 nets were on DirecTV the audience for the others sports would likely change very little. I would guess the Pac-12's prime demos for "other sports" are former Pac-12 athletes of those sports, family members of the current players, and hard core alums that obvious were more than willing to switch away from DirecTV years ago. A DirecTV customer in 2017 is so unlikely to be a fan of Pac-12 water polo or volleyball because if they were they would have switched away already.

The only solution would be to move out of the pacific time zone. As long as major networks want to space their offerings apart, they will rely on west coast teams to offer games for the last time slot of the day, just as it relies on east coast teams for the 12 noon/9 AM pacific time slot. There is no way around that math as long as the Pac-12 is mostly in the Pacific time zone.

Well the Pac-12 could choose to become a conference without a TV contract. Or one with a contract that mandates all games must start before 5PM local time. Those are possible, just not consistent with maximizing TV contract revenue.

I would like to see the next TV contract place greater limits on the number of games kicking off after 5pm. No team should have more than half its games that late, and there should be a cap on how many there can be in any single week.
Lack of national exposure is killing the conference.

Do you honestly think that if we move these games into prime time anyone will watch them? Who will broadcast? The broadcasters have already made it abundantly clear that they don't want us in prime time if we're not top 10. All that'll do is give the Pac-12 network a bunch of games competing against each other.

Spot on.
A mandate would lower the value of the next contract.
It might be restrictive enough to cause a potential buyer (ESPN) to pull out of the bidding completely.
And it would definitely force more games on to Pac-12 Nets since that 7:30/8:00 game on ESPN2 is not bumping anything from any other conference.
FWIW - Be careful about wishes.
Could easily imagine a network discovering that 9AM games are not strictly prohibited.
