Good Argument Can Be Made For Giving QB Job to Costello At This Point of Season - AncientCityIndian - 09-16-2017

We are playing too poorly on the O Line with a not so mobile QB.  Costello has a much quicker release and is a better runner.  We cannot do much worse with our passing performance.

It shouldn't be an argument.  And it should happen now. But it won't.

Shaw Made a Similar Move With Hogan at a Similar Juncture, Lex - AncientCityIndian - 09-16-2017

It might well happen.  What more is there to lose?

Everyone knows I have been calling for an OC for all of Shaw`s tenure and it is never going to happen.  So this is all we can do at this point in time.

Costello should be given the opportunity and Shaw really needs to look in the mirror.

I would rather the offensive line get fixed and be able to pass protect whoever is back there.  It is not a surprise that with poor offensive line play our quarterbacks have looked like crap.  I'm not sure how I feel about today's offensive line roulette, with Little starting at tackle and Bright moving to guard.  It might be ok if Little's raw talent is such that it can compensate for his lack of experience and his trajectory is so quick that in a few games we wind up ahead.  Unfortunately, the offensive line still struggled today in pass protection.  So, if this is just growing pains, then I can live with it, but if it's the staff rearranging deck chairs, it won't matter who we have at quarterback; they will suck.

The pass blocking was spotty. But he makes it look worse than it is. He has a slow release and no pocket feel.

Good OLine play will make an average QB look good, a good QB will look great. Look at USC.  Good OL, good QB = Voldemort. Fix the OL, were are fine. Costello is not the fix.

As far as Shaw looking in the mirror, we have been calling for that since the Fiesta Bowl.

Lol. I had some friends over for the game.

The Cardboard has gotten so much into my head that after the game, my immediate comment was that the people on the Cardboard will be clamoring for Costello now.

DAWG, he had time on the throw over the middle and he tossed a ground ball at a most crucial time. And has zero ability to escape.

Worse than anything is being unwatchable. Kind of like the Giants right now.

If we put Costello in there it would be hard for me to conceive of him looking much worse than Chryst did today.
I do think Chryst had been playing OK and improving up to today, so maybe it's possible this was just the day from hell for him.
I will say after observing UCLA's defense today, if he can't get it done against them it is time for a change.

Re: Good Argument Can Be Made For Giving QB Job to Costello At This Point of Season - scorecard - 09-17-2017

Truly a forgettable night for Chryst:

- the interception thrown with 1:14 left in the half on our own 21 was such a terrible decision to make (throwing into an area with 4 defenders) when we were leading 7-3 (and we totally didn't deserve to be leading at that point)
- SDSU then gifts us 30 yards on penalties to get us into field goal range, and he doesn't feel the backside pressure, and fumbles instead of kicking the FG to tie it at half (another big momentum swing for SDSU)
- he had been overthrowing the deep ball all day, notably missed Kaden Smith on a TE corner route that was a TD
- then he starts underthrowing, and throws the seam route into the dirt to a 6'7" TE Parkinson and badly underthrows the Hail Mary to JJAW

We only had 3 possessions (out of 12) that were more than 3 plays the entire night!  All of those possessions happened in the 2nd half.  The 3 converted third downs were all runs on 3rd and 1.  The other 3rd and 1 we had was where Scarlett was stuffed, and was obviously where we went for a FG instead of trying to get that 4th and 1.  That was our longest drive of 8 plays, and this was also the drive where Chryst cut in front of Love to try to make a block and instead slowed Love just enough so he was just tripped up by the defense.  So we really had 2 chances on that particular series to score 7, coming only away with 3.

He didn't seem to have these problems last year (or against Rice, for that matter).  He did have some inaccurate throws, but I don't recall lack of mobility or pocket feel.  Indeed, last year he was our third leading rusher with 41 rushes, including sacks and scarmbles and 3.9 yards per carry.  Three things have changed since then:

1) He injured his knee, so maybe he isn't quite 100% yet (and that may be physical or mental)
2) The offensive line has regressed
3) The defenses we played at the end of last year (and Rice) were bad, so maybe his stats were deceptive

I'm not sure how I rank the three, but I suspect that all three have contributed.

At this point, my vote would be to do whatever is best for next year.

As many Cardboarders have noted, if enough players choose to stay after this year (Holder, Meeks, Irwin, Schultz, Phillips, some others) there is a returning experience and star talent alignment of historic proportions possible next year.

Assuming we win at least 7, win a bowl, and beat Cal, I'd be willing to sacrifice some this year to optimize for next year.

Is the best move to give experience to Costello now or to hope for a peaking 5th year Chryst next year? Would putting Costello in now give him needed experience, or is it risky and dangerous to put in a less experienced qb now given our current issues? Would we be sending Costello into a Luck-Colts type of situation?

Re: Good Argument Can Be Made For Giving QB Job to Costello At This Point of Season - Phogge - 09-17-2017

The team that played last night can't win seven. It will take an adjustment by the staff, something that may be impossible. You absolutely can't have a QB throw a groundball when the game is on the line. You can't have a QB regardless of offensive style who can't move.

That is something that has happened repeatedly in the last few years and it drives me nuts.
We get the ball with a small lead and the game on the line. We need a drive to close out the game and can't get it.
Then we have to depend on the defense to win the game for us. Sometimes it works, but sometimes (as in last night) it doesn't.

Re: Good Argument Can Be Made For Giving QB Job to Costello At This Point of Season - GK3 - 09-17-2017

with Chryst we seem to give up any chance of running a read option, play action bootleg, play action and move the pocket outside etc.  SDSU showed us how valuable the ability to move out of the pocket is, and throw the ball to someone and not up for grabs.  I would take the guy for SDSU over Chryst anytime.  Fixing the Oline would be a great idea, but it is not clear we can, so instead of having a QB who plays the role of a statue give Burns or Costello a chance. The SDSU defense NEVER had to worry about Chryst breaking containment, as soon as he started his drop, then knew exactly where he was going to be the whole play.  So did everyone else.

Next season it is most likely that  the two QB's competing for the starting job are Costello and Mills ?

Re: Good Argument Can Be Made For Giving QB Job to Costello At This Point of Season - thunder_chik - 09-17-2017

I listened to the game on Learfield/Tune-In until we kicked the FG after advancing to the 4.  Cowardly!  Shawgren playing not to lose.  I'm almost used to seeing us win ugly, but losing ugly is intolerable.
I don't know what the answer is, but if we continue to perform this way, all I see are L's against UCLA, UW, Wazzu, ND and even possibly that team across the Bay.  Which would really depress me for the rest of the season. :'(

Re: Good Argument Can Be Made For Giving QB Job to Costello At This Point of Season - oman - 09-17-2017

Costello looked like a better option in the first game regardless of line play.

You go with your better option. Hopefully Costello has continued to look like a good option and is making his case.
