David Shaw on the NFL - stupac2 - 09-13-2017

From today's Inside the Cardinal e-mail: “I have not spoken to anybody in the NFL on any job since I left the NFL (in 2005).” — David Shaw

Unless I'm wildly misremembering, the scuttlebutt had always been that he had taken some preliminary talks, or even interviews. Interesting that he's saying there's been no job talk at all. I never thought he'd leave for the NFL any time soon, but not even listening if people come calling? I guess it's an even more remote possibility than I had originally thought. (Of course, Shaw could be massaging the truth there, but he's usually a pretty straight shooter.)

Now I assume he means "on any job [for me]." Because obviously he's talked to NFL guys with an interest in hiring them.

Re: David Shaw on the NFL - Hank 91 - 09-13-2017

I'm not worried that he's going to leave, but college ALWAYS say this -- "I haven't spoken to anyone with the _____ organization." In almost all cases, their agent has, which allows the coach to remain outwardly committed to his current program and by "truthful" in the fact that he, personally, isn't pursuing another job. It's all semantics, in most cases.

He may not have spoken with anyone personally, but I have no doubt an agent or other representative has.

David Shaw will coach us until he decides to leave.  When he does, he will have lots of opportunities.

His agent to some teams' search firms, yep.

I sure hope his kids get into Stanford.

At this point, I think that is likely, Mick.  Of course, a new Dean of Admissions can change everything...as we have seen before with the Mamlet years.  Thank goodness that was short lived.

Too long.  Long enough to put football as a D-1A FBS program in mortal danger.  Thanks to her reign of terror, even Bill Walsh suggested we drop to D-1 AA.

Even for children of valued employees, I think it is a little presumptuous to think it is likely that current 14, 12 and 7 year olds will get into Stanford.

Re: David Shaw on the NFL - DC 86 - 09-14-2017

There may be semantics involved as to whether he has spoken to NFL teams, directly or through intermediaries, but one fact that seems clear is that he has not interviewed for any NFL jobs, despite numerous opportunities to do so.

Precisely.  Heck, it would be a poor agent that doesn't field calls from interested NFL teams and use that as leverage in contract negotiations with Stanford, even if Shaw has no real interest in leaving.  In order for him to be paid at something approximating his true value, the risk that he could leave--however small that risk may be--ought to be factored into negotiations.

That said, I think Shaw is absolutely telling the truth when he hasn't interviewed or spoken directly with teams about him potentially becoming their coach.  I also wouldn't begrudge him if he had, as the important thing is that he has stayed committed to Stanford.

Fair point CT.  Assuming the applicants are well qualified, children of professors, coaches and staff enjoy a higher rate of admission to Stanford.  I'm fine with that.  Like Mick, I hope he stays at least another 11 years.

And Publius, agreed that Mamlet's reign was still too long.  It will be interesting to see how many more years Dean Shaw stays at the helm.    I hope he has many more as our Dean.
