Well not a good weekend for Stanford continues. Not that this one matters

just good for them to have a competitive game. winning by 50+ points is not that helpful.
Re: WBB:in Italy -

Boxscore is here:
http://www.gostanford.com/documents/2017/9/10/Stats_vs_Lucca_9_10_17.pdf
Starters: Fingall Dodson McPhee Brewer Wilson. Dodson gets a turn to start--over Smith. Brewer and Wilson start for the second game in a row--Tara is really studying those two as she tries to figure out how to use them in the real season.
Carrington was 4/8 and led with 12 points. Fingall was 4/4, but no one besides those two shot very well. Perhaps we ran into a tough defense--and the fact that we had only 4 assists for the entire game seems to suggest that too. Good warm up for ASU? Smith was 1/9, and overall three point shooting was 2/10, Anna Wilson had 0 assists to 8 turnovers. This sounds like a very ugly game. Hope we got it out of the system.
I'm not getting a lot of information about Lucca, the Italian professional team we played. From what I can gather they have just one American player--Porsha Roberts--who played at SF Austin and briefly with the Minnesota Lynx. They came in 2nd in their league last year and won the Italian A1 championship so they are probably pretty good. UConn, by the way, lost to the Slovenian professional team Celje while they were over there in August--so losing to these professional European teams does not seem all that abnormal. Absolutely terrific experience, and losing one might be more educational than winning them all.

Couple of things stand out to me:
-Wilson had 8 turnovers. Not sure how long she played, but that's pretty harmful to offensive production regardless. As a starter, she likely played most of the first quarter, and sure enough,
we only attempted 5 baskets the entire quarter, which suggests to me that we had a
bunch of turnovers in that period.
-In addition to Wilson, Brewer also had 0 points. If they both played the first quarter, that might explain part of the scoring differential. We actually kept with Lucca in the second and third quarters and outscored them by 8 in the fourth, so it was basically one bad quarter that probably featured a bunch of turnovers.
-In happier news, Williams was 3-7 for 8 points and Carrington was 4-8 for 12 (albeit with 5 turnovers to 1 assist). I could see a pretty solid starting lineup of Williams, Carrington, McPhee, and Smith, with Johnson and Fingall alternating at the 5 (and possibly also Dodson).
-One other thing to note about our paucity of assists: I don't know how much Marta played, but she provided 50% (2) of our 4 assists. Last season, she provided about 1/3 (169) of our 586 assists on the season, a percentage the seems small only because Karlie and Briana combined for another 195 of them. With both of them gone, we're going to be really weak in that category unless Marta develops enough offense to stay on the court most of the game, or Williams or Wilson can develop their assist game. McPhee is the only other returning player with significant assist potential (she had 74 last year), and we'll be looking for her to be our lead scorer alongside Smith, so we can't rely on her to be feeding the ball too much. This might actually be our biggest weakness with this group of players.

Wilson has previously shown great assist potential but it simply did not show in this game. Getting a solid, balanced point guard who can score, dish assists, and move the ball without turning it over is a clear priority--we just don't know who it will be yet.

Not sure how good Lucca really is this year. Last year when they won championship they had 3 Americans who played major minutes - Harmon, Pedersen, and Julie wotja - who all played major minutes. Just appears to be a really sloppy, poor shooting game

We lost to Reyer Venezia today. Stats are here:
http://www.gostanford.com/documents/2017/9/12/Stats_vs_Reyer_Venezia_9_12_17.pdf
Starting lineup changed: Kaylee, Alanna, Jerome, McPhee, Sniezek. I think Tara is just experimenting.Â
DiJonai led the scoring again--as she has in all three games in Italy. She was 4/10 but also 4/4 from the line. She also led rebounding with 7 (hurrah!) but also led turnovers with 7 (ugh.)Â
Anna Wilson had no points, 0 assists, and 5 turnovers. Sniezek had 0 points, 2 assists, and 2 turnovers.
Elsewhere in guard competition Kiana Williams seemed to do the best with 10 points on 3/5 shooting, including 1/2 from three and 3/3 from the line. She added 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 turnover, and 1 steal. Just today, she and Dijonai looked like the best guards.
Alanna at 5/9 seems to have acquitted herself well. Alyssa Jerome--the stat line is screwy. It says she was 4/8 for six points? In any case, she also had 5 rebounds, an assist, and a block, and only 1 turnover--so she did quite well for herself.
The amount of minutes is missing, so all these stats may be highly deceptive. I get the feeling that in each game Tara is featuring some different players to try them out and see what they can do.
In summary--Carrington and Williams and Jerome all seemed to help themselves today. As for the game, we led the whole first half, held tight in the 3rd, and got buried in the 4th to lose 77-62. I am sure Tara is looking at defense as much as she is trying to get the offense together. Putting a freshman offensive star on the floor who scores lots of points doesn't help us if she can't defend and allows the other team to get easy baskets. Now is the time to find out who can defend against players who are as good or better than the teams they will be playing against in the college game.
Two more games. The last one we will play against Karlie.

Interesting. Thanks for the recap and analysis. You're absolutely right - without minutes played, and really, without the play-by-play scoresheet, it's really hard to tell what possible defensive liabilities our players may have. It's hard to tell if Marta is racking up such poor stats in only 5 minutes of player or 35 minutes. It
is telling that our assists are down, our turnovers up, and our defense appears to be somewhat weak, because those were the three facets of Karlie and Bri's game that were strongest. Carrington seems like something of a wild player, for both better and worst, but it does seem like she has upside potential. Unless Williams is a defensive liability that the box score doesn't reveal, through three games I'm liking her stats much more than our other options for PG.

Yeesh. We are trending in the wrong direction. At this rate, our game against UConn is going to be a bloodbath...

It's really hard to gauge. Schio and Lucca two of Italy's top teams. Without some of their foreign players, I'd reckon they are still a power to be reckoned with. I think that Tara is really trying to give everyone on the trip a lot of playing time because of the nature of the occasion. I think once the season rolls around things will definitely change, but I'm not too worried yet--although some of those turnovers in the video just seemed silly. I didn't see Alanna in the post game picture, so I wonder if something was up with her today.

So how tough are these teams that we are playing? Are they equivalent to a college basketball team or a WNBA team? Knowing the level of competition will allow us to gain more perspective on these results.
Also, we have nearly 2 more months until the actual season starts and so Tara and co. will have plenty of time to work on things, both on a team-wide scale and with individuals.
Thirdly, maybe since they are exhibition matches and don't count in our official record, Tara wants to experiment with new sets or schemes in a game situation that can't easily be replicated in practice.
Of course, it would be great if we won all these games, but if this trip to Italy allows us to give us a sneak preview of what lineups or strategies that we can use and where our players are, then that is more important, IMHO.
Especially considering we are replacing 3 starters and our underclassmen, including our incoming freshman class, have the potential to contribute sooner than later, these games have allowed us to integrate them into starting roles or playing significant minutes without losses in our regular season.

Good to hear those are top teams, and yes, I admittedly overreacted just a hair. :D Obviously testing things now is good, especially with so many new puzzle pieces to fit together. And the experience will be especially valuable given that our second game of the season is away at Ohio State and our third is against UConn. It was just a bit dismaying to see our margin of victory go from +2 to -15 to -26.

Very ugly numbers. No one in double figures and no one shot the ball well.
We had 4 made baskets in the entire first half from the floor. We were 3/22 from 3-point range. I hope this result was an aberration

Huh. Looks like McPhee didn't play. Wonder why...
Also: it was 36-13 at the half. OOPH.

In a video of the team warming up for one of the games, the 3-point line looked like WNBA distance (22'2") which might account for some of it.
Re: WBB:in Italy -

While the guard play hasn't been stellar, Alanna's shooting has got to be a concern on this trip.
Re: WBB:in Italy -

These latest results are depressing. However, DiJonai once again leads in points--that is all 4 games so far. She also had 10 rebounds, coming a point away from a double double against a team that walloped us. She makes almost all her free throws. She is looking more and more like a starter to me.
Brewer made 2/4 treys, which is a good sign.Â
I worry about the dearth of assists on the whole trip. Turnovers, at 17, were not as horrible as they have been. But our shooting percentage was just dreadful. Anna Wilson was 0/6 from three point range, Alanna at 1/7? Not good.Â
I hope we don't get some bad news about McPhee.
As for the competition in Italy...not sure if we played different teams than UConn, but UConn won 3 and lost 1. The loss was to a Slovenian team.

Good European pro teams like the last two Stanford played are a rung below WNBA level, but significantly above college teams. The players have professional experience and are mostly older than college players.
The first team they played was something-academy, and apparently the players were more their own age, if not younger. And Stanford had a big height advantage.
