An Impulsive Observation - AncientCityIndian - 08-20-2017

With three tight ends with great hands who are 6' 5", 6' 6" and 6' 7" and a QB who is 6' 4" tall,  I would think we may be much more effective in the red zone this year.  And A-W can leap.

Re: An Impulsive Observation - OutsiderFan - 08-20-2017

It doesn't speak well for an offensive football team if it needs tall guys to score TDs, but having them certainly should be an asset.

Re: An Impulsive Observation - BobK - 08-20-2017

In 1957 the 49ers went to the playoffs with several ally oop passes YA Title to RC Owens.  So it can work.
Other than than I'd agree with you outsider 😀

I agree, and you can be sure with Shaw in command, we will try to bang it into the end zone at least once, most of the time. It is real good to have the option to throw the fade, or to have a jump ball on the end line, because if the opponent crashes down with everybody, it is a free TD.

Here's a 6'5" WR who could catch passes at the back of an endzone...especially against a 6'1" DB.

Opps, 4! I Forgot Scooter Harrington, Another 6' 5" Guy With Potential - AncientCityIndian - 08-20-2017

What an embarrassment of potential at tight end.  I do not think an expectation of 75 plus catches at the TE position this year is unreasonable.

Re: An Impulsive Observation - Treebound - 08-20-2017

I think Dwight Clark was 6'4" (and that's probably generous), but who's counting Mick?!  He used to live down the street from us here in Menlo Park.  That game, "The Catch" was the first pro football game that I was able to attend, with thanks to my Mom who got us the tickets.

As for RC Owens, BobK, he was my first boss as I worked for the 49ers for two summers up at Sierra College in Rocklin. Super nice man that loved to laugh!  My Mom, who you know, worked for the Sierra College and helped me get the job there before I headed down to Stanford as a freshman.  Bill Walsh was very kind to me when he found out I was going to be a Stanford Cardinal.  It was a fantastic first job!

Close to me is Dan Bunz restaurant which I go to periodically and my dentist when I moved here Mrs Bunz.

But ya got me beat.

RC was a student of my father's at a little liberal arts college in Idaho.  He was a wonderful basketball player in college, too, playing alongside his roommate Elgin Baylor.  Years later, when the college had alumni gatherings here in the Bay Area, RC used to come.  He had been in an auto accident a few years earlier that really debilitated him, but he hobbled in and was always one of the kindest and most genteel of souls.  Fond memories.

Re: An Impulsive Observation - lex24 - 08-20-2017

Not a fade. A 50-50 jump ball. Fade is a throw lofted to back corner over the shoulder that receiver tries to run under.  😜 Stanford's  TE and tall receivers more often than not take a few steps, stop turn and basically try to "block out" the DB, then out jump him and catch the ball at its highest point. Frankly it's a akin to going for a rebound. But it is not a fade route.

I'm hoping for 80/20 jump balls (with the 20% incompletes) this year, with Stewart (6'4") and all-world hands Irwin added to the list of targets given a chance to make the catch.

Re: An Impulsive Observation - Phogge - 08-20-2017

The Alley Oop was an accident. At practice one day YA tossed a desperation pass in a drill. Owens went up over the guy covering him (maybe Dickie Moegle and caught it. Offensive coach Red Hickey said, "That's our Alley Oop play."

Trivia: Moegle was involved in one of the most famous plays in college football history. Name and describe.

NO PEEKY.

Re: An Impulsive Observation - BobK - 08-20-2017

Running for a TD at the Cotton? Bowl Moegle was tackled by a player off the other team's bench.  A TD was awarded.

Yes on the alley oop but keep in mind Owens could sky and was an outstanding basketball player as 81alum pointed out

Re: An Impulsive Observation - Phogge - 08-20-2017

A Bama sub named Lewis came off the bench and tackled Moegle. The refs awarded a TD as Rice won the Cotton Bowl.

What happened when Tom Harmon was running for his fourth TD against Kal at Memorial in Harmon's Voldemort year?

All through the 1950s there were basketball players experimenting with and showing off the "alley oop" which today we would call the lob pass.  RC Owens and Elgin Baylor pulled it off to each other repeatedly in college.  When YA Tittle passed the jump ball to RC Owens they borrowed the basketball name for the play (that RC had executed so often in basketball) and the name stuck in football.

Re: An Impulsive Observation - Phogge - 08-20-2017

Why does the site ignore the name of the trophy given to Plunk, Harmon, Blanchard, Davis and others? It isn't even a four letter word starting with f.

Hickey probably knew the hoops maneuver and that's why he made the comment. Read Dan Maguire's 49er history of the 40's and 50's.

Because someone thought it unfair that Stanford has had runners-up for the trophy four times in the last decade, with nary a winner.

Re: An Impulsive Observation - Stymie - 08-21-2017

I'm sure Phogge knew that.

It's time to get over these transient slights.  Let's move on into the real world.

What award?  There is no such award for Stanford players in modern times.  ::)
