DBs Coaching Position Endowed - indiancardinal - 08-18-2017

http://www.gostanford.com/news/2017/8/16/football-defensive-backs-position-endowed.aspx

I am surprised no one has mentioned it here as yet. Congrats to Coach Akina and a big thank you to the Couch Family. Akina is now the first Couch Family Defensive Back's coach.

I believe this is now the 5th of our 10 staff positions that have been endowed. Including Turley's position would make it 6. This is essential for us to remain competitive for quality coaches. May the golden era of Stanford Football continue for evermore :)

Anybody want to start the collection drive for The Cardboard Offensive Consultant to HC position:)

More like The Cardboard Unpaid Graduate Assistant.  I could get on board with that.

I'm sure this is a stupid question, but exactly how does this help us (i.e., via endowment vs. donations totaling the same $)?  Does this provide each coach with some greater level of certainty re: their compensation (or perhaps some supplement to a "normal" contract)?  I can't imagine that a coach would fear that Stanford's check may bounce, and wouldn't think they'd care if their pay came from an endowment or a traditional budget (understanding that the more money we have, in general, the more competitive we can be in making those offers)?  What am I missing?

I don't have any inside knowledge. I was just inferring from the fuss made with each endowment that: (a) it was a sizeable gift that allowed the "interest" (or whatever annual distribution from whatever it was invested in) would be able to "keep on giving" every year (as opposed to a donation that may not be there next year), and (b) that the coach in the newly-endowed position got to keep some of that additional income. Again, pure speculation on my part.

Re: DBs Coaching Position Endowed - OutsiderFan - 08-18-2017

The endowment is a lump sum of money that will be invested with the idea the annual return on the fund will pay for whatever the expense is for the endowed position.  The thinking is that if the position is endowed, the school itself doesn't have to worry about covering the cost of the position out of revenues or from other donations.  Many schools endow the scholarships that are offered to athletes as well.  I've not heard if Stanford's football scholarships are endowed or not.  I assume they are to some degree.

Yes, many (if not by now all) of Stanford's scholarships are endowed.

When you go into the AD thru the double doors the walls are lined with the scholarship donors.  Many many are endowed and I'm talking Stanford sports not just FB.

BTW that's where the Hall of Champions will soon be and the Director has been hired.

Assuming Stanford wants to, I think we are always going to be able to come up with the money to hire and pay quality coaches.
Still, I think it is a very nice gesture from someone who wants to help the program succeed.

True, but as these endowments generate investment income, money that is raised elsewhere can be applied to facilities and other capital improvements instead of recurring salary costs. Having endowed staff positions is also a major benefit if department revenues fall and budgets are tightened; for non-revenue sports it could save a program from elimination if coaching salaries are endowed.

Re: DBs Coaching Position Endowed - LuckE2Bhere - 08-21-2017

All makes sense, but since money is really fungible, I don't see a lot of difference between such a (generous/welcome!) donation being deemed an endowment vs. any other big check of the same denomination.  The endowment rules just seem to limit your ability to spend it in the near term.  Helpful discipline, if needed, but I still don't see how any of this makes a difference from a recruit's perspective (unless they have some fear that Stanford is going to run out of money and stop paying for good coaches while they're here - maybe a legitimate concern at Cal, but that should be the last thing on someone's mind here)?

Re: DBs Coaching Position Endowed - fullmetal - 08-21-2017

If nothing, it's a sign to the coaching staff and recruits that donors are willing to step up and invest in the program.  It's stability and support.
