Patrick Rodgers ahead at the John Deere Classic - Spiny_Norman - 07-14-2017

Patrick Rodgers has yet to win on the PGA tour even as his friend and college rival Justin Thomas has 3 wins this season alone.

Rodgers has not put together 4 good days to contend for a championship this season. But he is off to a great start at the John Deere tournament this week.  He leads by 2 after 36 holes.

And Maverick McNealy easily made the cut with two rounds in the 60s.

Rodgers holds on, two-stroke lead.

Dottie Pepper and her announcing teammate agreed they'd never seen anyone hit a ball farther with such a short backswing.

Win here would get him into the British Open and move him into the top 50 (around 41st) on the money list.  (He's back in the 200s).  Also vaults him way up the Fed Ex points list and could get him into the first tournament of the cup.  And a tour win earns a two-year tour card.

Rogers probably can't win with another 68.  There are lots of birdies on this course and a couple guys are likely to make runs.

Maverick finished -2 and back around 40th.

I would love for him to shoot 68.  It's certainly possible that it wouldn't snag him the victory, but in truth, Patrick has not really learned to finish tournaments so far in his career.  Such a score would clearly be a major step in that learning process.  Further, it would force his nearest pursuers to shoot 66 in order to tie.  Such an outcome would presumably put him in the thick of things as the tournament reaches its finale.

Re: Patrick Rodgers ahead at the John Deere Classic - CornFed - 07-16-2017

Patrick has a 1-stroke lead and four holes to play.  DeChambeau put a remarkable shot onto the green on the par-5 17th and a 2-putt will put him into a tie for the lead.  This is a PERFECT opportunity for Rodgers to experience his swing under the gun.  Will be fun to see the young man face it down.

Re: Patrick Rodgers ahead at the John Deere Classic - CornFed - 07-16-2017

Before DeChambeau even has a chance to putt, Rodgers sinks a 20 foot putt at 15 to increase his lead to 2.  DeChambeau's two-putt birdie merely holds his deficit at one.  Hitting from the center is probably a welcome change for Rodgers, who can be a bit wild off the tee.

Re: Patrick Rodgers ahead at the John Deere Classic - CornFed - 07-16-2017

Errant drive on #17 has dramatically threatened Patrick's chances.  DeChambeau made a clutch birdie at 18 which is beginning to look like the winning blow.  Patrick needs to sink a 10 footer just to keep this thing interesting.  It is fascinating how quickly this game can turn on you.

Looking dire for our hero.  He needs to chip in from behind the green on #18 in order to force a playoff.  He is getting closer and closer.  The future looks bright for him, but he needs to make some dramatic improvements in his driving accuracy.  I am really impressed with this guy.

Missed his birdie chip by inches

The young guns have really taken over. 24 year old Cullen Shinkwin made a novice blunder that cost him the Scottish Open when he passed on laying up to the par 5 final hole and bogied his way to a losing playoff.

Rahm and others just bomb their way past hazard and bunker and can putt. Spieth when on uses his short game and putting to contend. It's a great time to be in front of a large TV watching the extremely well covered modern game and the young kids who play with no fear.
