Garvin seems to be using his time away from the board well, carving out a speciality in writing obituaries of former Latin American dictators.  It is a fun read so I thought I would share:

Man...that garvin is one gifted writer - Redrum - 05-30-2017

Miss him. One of the founding Bolsheviks that started this site.  I was a journalist for a few years after Stanford, but this and other pieces of his remind me that-- as a pure writer-- I was like a Double A minor league player looking at Frank Robinson or Hank Aaron.

(P.S.  called him a Bolshevik just because I know it would really bug Glenn)

Good one redrum

Glenn is a great writer.

Man, so well written. I'm not a big twitter guy, but of the 30 or so people I follow, two journalists separately linked this article.

Loved the quote at the end too.

Alberto Fujimori and Daniel Ortega, you're on notice. Send the man a bottle of wine, at least.

I just binge-watched the second season of Narcos on Netflix.  Anyone else into that show?  Noriega made a brief footnote-like appearance or two.

Garvin spent several years in Central America as a journalist.  It's his wheelhouse, and his almost-personal recounting of Noriega's exploits shows it.  Garvin writes the obituary with the appropriate level of respect due--colloquial, detailed, and brutally honest: befitting a bully-dictator who ruled through fear and friends but lost everything when both were gone.

Yeah, I've enjoyed both seasons of Narcos. Pablo's story is just so interesting. I've heard great things about Patron Del Mal,  a Colombian show, but it's over 100 eps so I've been wary of starting it. The Two Escobars 30 for 30 doc also excellent, think it's been mentioned on this board before.

You managed to take an officially OT thread and bring it on topic. Doug Miro, creator and executive producer of Narcos, is Stanford '94.

No journalist has the eye for detail like garvin.  He will pick something out that's memorable or funny that illuminates.  (That witch doctor on Noriega's staff.)

I've also never known a person with a memory like his and I took a class with Barton Bernstein.

It's fun interacting with him on Facebook, but it's not the same.  That's a venue that's too concise for his talent.  I still hold out hope that he comes back here.
