Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - Hulk01 - 05-19-2017

They've teed off in Illinois and it's ugly.

One of many examples:  The women for #16 Texas have played a total of 26 holes and have made just 12 pars, along with four double bogeys and a triple.

Again, this is a brutal course--155 slope from the back tees, 76.1 rating.  Perhaps it will make for fascinating match play.

And when our guys take over there next week, they'll will have to be hitting fairways or they could be coming home early again this year.

+ 10 leads.  And that's on the front 9.
Stanford tees off in 30

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - fullmetal - 05-19-2017

Ohio State (+11) leads through holes 10-13.  Brutal.

Just for fun:
I'll peg the first round leading team at +10.
First round leading player at -1.

Anyone have any insight as to why Chou got the nod over Kersten?

From Winflop, in an earlier thread:

(05-18-2017, 01:27 PM)winflop link Wrote:Saw that coming. Kersten was pretty consistent in her scores and they weren't great so I'd rather take a chance on someone else. Chou may not do much better or may do worse but that #5 position is where you can take a bit of a flier when you have such a solid top 4.

I think the theory is that if the tails are wider on the possible outcomes for Chou, then she could have an amazing day and count among our top 4 (they drop the lowest scoring player each round). If Kersten was consistently always the worst, there's an incentive to use a wild card at #5. The opposite logic will apply if they get to match play.

#1 Cardinal paired today with #2 Alabama and #3 Florida.  On holes 2 through 5, Cardinal at +2, Alabama at +4, and Florida at +5.

Chou is struggling at +5.  Others steady at E or +1.

Geaux Cardinal!

If they checked the weather forecast, maybe they would have stayed with the steady hand.  I imagine someone with high variability would be thrown askew by the conditions.

It's 43.5 degF, raining lightly/misting, and lightly breezy (gusts up to 5mph).  I imagine the wind speed may increase over the afternoon.  Cold and wet...tough conditions.

The last part of the storm looks to be pushing through the area right now.  There were two groups of afternoon teams.  Both afternoon groups are probably going to benefit from better weather later in the day.  (Soft greens, less rain, etc.) A team from the second of the two afternoon groups will likely post the best result for the day as the majority of their play will happen in better conditions.

Many of the morning teams are likely never going to recover from the morning challenges.  Luck of the draw I guess.

I don't know about that. The afternoon scores so far are as high or higher than the morning scores.  And remember that the afternoon teams are the 15 higher seeded teams.  Between Stanford, Alabama and Florida (the top 3 seeded teams), there have been a total of 0 birdies so far.  Conditions must be brutal.

The average score for the morning teams was 81.23.  We'll see if that goes up or down when the afternoon teams complete their rounds.

And things don't get much better tomorrow.  Slightly warmer with thunderstorms.

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - Hulk01 - 05-19-2017

Yes, the late starters aren't scoring either.

The coaches can't be happy.  And if they keep this set up, the match play events could take all day.

It is helpful to have the #2 and #3 seeded teams playing with us because it gives a good read on how our team is doing relatively. Currently we are at +11, and the other two are at +18 and +23. Seems like we're playing well.

The lowest score in the clubhouse is also +23.

Cardinal looking relatively good at +11 near the halfway point.  But not sure how the back 9 plays relative to the front 9.

Isn't Coach Walker from Scotland?  She must feel right at home in these conditions.

It looks like teams ranked 8-14 will post the best rounds.  Not coincidentally, they are all going to be in the group that played after the front moved over the course.

Doesn't seem like it is fun, but the only real objective is to finish in the top 8 after 4 days of stroke play.  Those at +30 or better tonight are likely going to remain in the mix.

Thanks for the link Eric.  Looks like 5 of the 7 toughest holes are still ahead of them.  Thatsa important!

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - fullmetal - 05-19-2017

I'm also certain the weather really affected the first wave(s) of teams...unlucky, but it is an outdoor sport.  Tomorrow--thunderstorms!  And the high will be 74 degF compared to 50 degF today.  Time for the tough to get going.

Speaking of which, Stanford seems to be gaining momentum vs. ASU!  (Stanford is one stroke better through five more holes now.)

A full 18 holes on that course in cold, wet and windy weather must be tough.

Northwestern, Kent State and Miami are all together, and and all 3 are likely to finish in the top 5 for the day.  Lucky group, favorable weather IMHO.  I just don't think Miami would have held up in the cold and stormy morning.

Re: Last woman standing: NCAA golf begins - fullmetal - 05-19-2017

Does women's golf have a fairness committee?  I guess that question's been answered...

Still thinking about this: #14 Kent State has a 15 stroke lead--FIFTEEN--in the first day of the national championship over #1 Stanford seemingly by virtue of weather.  Maybe the weather is crazy tomorrow and the fairness works out, but 15 strokes seems like a lot at this level.Â
