Who is the next Round 1 NFL Stanford Player?

Meeks, Reid, Parkinson, Mills, Sarrell, Little, ????

Re: Who is the next Round 1 NFL Stanford Player? - winflop - 04-28-2017

Meeks or Schultz. I doubt either one of them stays after next season, barring injury of course.

Herbig also looks like he could make it but he will be here in 2018.

Meeks is the best football player on the Stanford team right now, IMO.  But neither he nor Schultz are athletically gifted enough to be first round selections, IMO.  Justin Reid has the athletic ability to be a first round pick, but he's got to up his production as a ball hawking Safety to make that happen.

It seems Stanford actually has a lot of guys who will be drafted, just probably not first round draftees in the next couple years.

It is an interesting question.

Last year McCaffrey and Thomas were clearly the two best players on the team. But players emege all the time.

An out of the box guess would be Alijah Holder. He's an interesting comparison to Meeks. Meeks is more flashy and more likely to rack up interceptions, but before he got injured last year Holder was a more physical player and I think more consistent. As it was, he tied with Meeks for in number of pass break ups and he only played in three and a half games. [Meeks and Holder had 6, Reid and Murphy had 7.]
He's only played a season and a quarter, but if he comes back healthy he could be in the running for best defender on the team.

After Bryce averages 7.7 YPC, returns three kicks for TD's and catches 25 passes for an additional seven TD's he goes first round to a team looking for the next Darren Sproles.

In 2019 Walker Little will have just completed his sophomore season, and will not yet be eligible for the draft (unless he is 21 by then).

Presuming that Phillips will have the great season that is possible and we all hope for, he could be the next one.

I thought I kept hearing last night that McCaffrey was the next Darren Sproles.

The variety of responses to the original question speak well for the state of Stanford football.

Only 120.3 days until kickoff!

Geaux Cardinal!

I think Reid, Holder and Meeks all get drafted in that order, but not that many DBs are first rounders so I doubt any of them achieve that status. Same with the tight ends. They will be in NFL but not first rounders. I think one of OTs is a safer bet even though it is at least 3 years out.

8/32 first rounders this year were DBs, 7/31 first rounders last year were DBs.

No, McCaffrey is the next Tommie McDonald.

Then I guess Love will have to settle for being the next McCaffrey... of course after he's Stanford's next runner-up for the trophy that must not be mentioned.

I don't think I am going out on a limb here.

Trevor Speights.

Take a look at his Senior Year of high school highlights.  The Spring Game showed that he is the real deal.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jbVqU4w_hg

During his senior year he scored 50 TDs and ran for 3195 yards (13.7 per carry) his senior year in Texas 6A football, the largest and the best football classification in the US.  Check out the subtle move at 6:30 in the clip.

I think a few names that were mentioned earlier could be 1st rounders.  Maybe before Trevor.

But I predict he will be right up there with Nelson, Vardell, Gerhart, and McCaffrey and hopefully Love.

Pretty amazing that willingham never had a first round draft pick.

Re: Who is the next Round 1 NFL Stanford Player? - fullmetal - 04-29-2017

I have the highest hopes for Speights, but he did play for a school in the RGV, which gets knocked for not being an area as well-resourced or focused on football as other regions in Texas.  Not saying that he won't be good, just contextualizing his HS numbers a bit.  His teams never made it deep into the postseason either, iirc.

No matter.  He's got his chance now.

Re: Who is the next Round 1 NFL Stanford Player? - CowboyIndian - 04-29-2017

You'd be a lot more confident in his ability if you'd seen the Spring Game. Most impressive performance of the day.
