Stanford loses to $15 Utah, but it was respectable, 8-6. Katie Donovan of Utah gave up six runs, three earned.
Stanford falls to 0-4 in conference.

Respectable losses are still losses, especially when you're fighting for your coaching job.

I am so proud of the players and their performance tonight. They deserved to win this game, if not for terrible management of the pitching staff. Once again, the coaching staff waited too long to make a pitching change; one can tell Carolyn (or many pitchers for that matter) is getting tired when she starts giving up wild pitches late in games. Carolyn pitched a
fantastic game against a Top 15 squad who had come into this contest hitting .324. However, after giving up back-to-back base runners in the seventh with one out in a two-run game (5-3 Utah), Coach Hanson should have turned to her bullpen, as Kayler and Kiana have both been good in relief. Instead, she only made a change after a wild pitch and a walk loaded the bases. It is a lot to ask for a freshman pitcher to be perfect in order to keep an offense like that off the scoreboard with the bases loaded. Unfortunately, one mistake (three-run double) made the difference in the game.
Secondly, I agree with Winlop. Respectable losses are still losses. For some perspective, last year during our 0-24 conference season, we had 6 "respectable" Pac-12 losses by 2 or fewer runs. The 0-24 record was still a thoroughly unacceptable performance by the coaching staff.

I was at baseball but down 5-3 then 8-3 going to the bottom of the 7th and we score 3 with the bases loaded. So a comeback against good teams is so rare for us
D I don't really think our young pitchers are yet even PAC 12 average but great point you made on the non change in the 7th

I totally agree with D4Cohn's assessment of the situation. Pitching cannot be used as an excuse this year. Coach Hanson has 5 options from which to choose. She consistently leaves C. Lee in the games when she tires and becomes a bit wild. She's done a great job in the circle this year. The pitching staff is very young and needs big support from the offense to maintain a lead. Coaching and making the right decisions based on the ebb and flow of the game is the critical problem with this staff. Even the broadcasters commented how the Stanford team huddles before batting to discuss batting strategies while Hanson just stands next to the huddle. In previous years, the HC would always be active in discussing strategies with his batters.
Has Coach Hanson or Coach Lang talked to the soon retiring baseball coach Mark Marquess on techniques of how to manage a pitching staff? Several other softball teams coaches have done just that. Today's game has gravitated from the old school thought of just one dominating pitcher to carry a team throughout the season. People think that the underhand pitching motion is not harmful to the arm. Total batcrap! If anything, the underhand motion stresses the arm and shoulder even more due to the torque caused by all the different pitching motions these ladies use. There have also been injuries to pitchers more frequently including Stanford players do to overuse.
I am afraid it's going to be another long league season. TIME FOR A CHANGE IN LEADERSHIP!

Here is an approx statistical breakdown on their 16 wins and loses b4 the league season started:
Stanford current RPI: 81Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Â
Ave. RPI of 16 pre-league wins: 130
Ave. RPI of 10 pre=league losses: 76
If that doesn't tell you the story of how the pre-pleague schedule was soft, then nothing will! Just like last yr, one must take a look at the dropoff in BA,etc. in Pac-12 play so far. It is obvious that the easy pre-league schedule was arranged by Coach Hanson in her contract year. One loss and one win was against Drake,RPI 107,loss vs. Omaha,RPI 180, and U.S.D. RPI 192.
This is not acceptable!                     Â
