In the 8th grade, I was getting information from Tara and Amy (Tucker). I wrote back, Go Cardinals. She made a quip, If you come here you are going to have to learn the difference between Cardinals and the Cardinal.

I think I've mentioned this before, but when I arrived at Stanford as a freshman in the fall of 1980, we were the Cardinals. I think we had been the Cardinals for a few years, and I don't think it changed to Cardinal until my sophomore or junior year.

I believe the change took place your sophomore year. We created a "cheer" that went something like: "Go Cardinal! It's not the bird, it's not the sin, it's not the papal emissary. It's just the color. Go Cardinal!"
For some reason, it never really caught on.

That's pretty funny, JJJ. I don't remember the cheer, but I think the Band did a halftime show when the change to Cardinal became official.

I think that was my first ever halftime show.
Are we the bird - no.
Are we the catholic church official - no.
Are we the sin - no (too bad).
We're just a glop of red.

The first halftime show of 1982 was the "Stereo" show (against Oregon State). The "Cardinal" show was later that year.
Or maybe "Cardinal" was pregame.

Well, my memory is pretty hazy here.
I think I remember we did it twice - once in the first home game vs San Jose State with a reduced sized band (but I was there staying with my sister) and once after the students all arrived. I kind of think that one was pregame and one was halftime. Though I am not very sure of any of that.
Looking back at the schedule, the OSU game was October 2, which would have been the first home game with students. [I remember watching the come back win over tOSU on TV during the end of frosh orientation, which was one week earlier.] SJSU game was two weeks before the OSU game, just before frosh orientation.

I wasn't on campus for SJSU. I do remember a Cardinal show from some point - but I was in the announcing booth for Oregon State, so I'm quite sure about that one.
