Due to the last second 2OT Cal victory over Utah, our broadcast didn't start until 19-18 Colorado from which point it went pretty much straight to an 11-pt deficit for us. 7 traveling calls and counting (I saw Sharma and Travis commit theirs, I assumed that number was both teams combined). We battle back to a 7-pt deficit with 3 mins left. Lots of empty possessions due to turnovers. So far no Superheroes on air (certainly not on the court). First half ends 41-31 buffs (7/9 vs 5/12 FT).

81-74 was the final. Tough to lose to a team that is 2-7 in conference.

In 2H, we closed to within 4, let it balloon to down 15, and finished down 7, never in doubt in the final 10 minutes. Perversely, knowing the final score almost made it more painful to watch because every mistake (missed FT&layup, and bad pass) seemed magnified as I thought of what could have been. Can't really justify such a suboptimal FT performance at home. 14/24

Some notes from Maples:
** The Stanford Band and Dollies are still absent. Tonight's music provided by the Woodside High Band (corrected) and a DJ.
** Women's Volleyball showed off their shiny NCAA Championship trophy at the half. Dunning's retirement announced to the crowd.
** The new T-shirt guns can hit the back row. I can tell because they all zoomed WAY over my head. Luckily they were handing out free promotional T-Shirts at the door.
** Free Throws are a problem with this Stanford team. We shot 58% from the line and missed both free throws on several trips to the stripe during the Buffs critical second half run.
** Colorado had lost their previous ten Pac 12 road games. They looked good against us though.
** The Cardinal's second half run that closed to within four points happened when the Colorado starters were on the bench taking a long breather. The lead ballooned back to 11 and stayed there once the first team was reinserted.
** Ugly game with lots of fouling and turnovers. Stanford lost on the blocks where we were out muscled, out rebounded and outplayed
** Ala football, the team lines up and sways (not much singing) along with Hail! Stanford, Hail! at the end of the game. When did this start?
** Maples is still fun but today the lower bowl was less than half full and the crowd was quiet. There were maybe 75 students at the game. My son hadn't been to a game for many years and remarked, "I didn't realize how special the Maples crowd used to be. I should have appreciated those days more." He particularly missed the Band and the old 6th man antics - "Left, Right, Left, Right, SIT DOWN" and so on. I'd love to see Haase bring those days back.
** But hey, I heard on this board that requiring a hefty donation for the right to buy season tickets was a great strategy so it must be working, right?

I believe the HSH thing started this year with Haase. Also players thanking the student section?

Went last night. Really disappointing performance. Played well the first 10 mins of the second half, but otherwise play was poor at both ends of the floor. The low energy level was Dawkins-esque. A team that could make open shots would have won this game by 25.
- The biggest delta I saw was that Colorado moved the ball by passing and Stanford moved the ball by dribbling.
- Marcus Sheffield was the lone bright spot in the first half and I think he took all of two shots in the second half and made it to the line once.
- Was nice to see Pickens get his stroke back after three really tough games. He has to score to give this team a chance.
- Three of Humphrey's four fouls were just stupid fouls. He had 13 & 8 but barely played over 20 mins. He's got some great talent but has got to find a way to stay on the court for 30 mins.
- The offense runs at a much faster pace when Cartwright is out there vs. Sanders. I'd rather see a young player backing up Cartwright
- I look forward to future years when we have guards who can make 3s. Allen can't make them, Sanders won't take them, and Cartwright struggles to get open looks and needs to learn how to create space for himself. I consider Pickens & Sheffield as 3s

I watched part of both games last night. Cal's was very entertaining, Stanford's made me switch to a movie. Bird went off like Casey sometimes did but the biggest difference was the UC point, Moore. Aggressive and penetrating and his late drive in regulation kept Cal in the game. Lots of spirit and didn't see any anarchists in the crowd.
Stanford needs guards.

HSH was embarrassing. Players swaying in front of empty student section with recorded music playing.
The live music was from Woodside High School. It was great to hear live music. Dump the canned crap, scoreboards and Theo telling us what to do, etc.Â
Atmosphere at Maples is worse than product on floor. LSJUMB cannot return soon enough to Maples.
Long way to go to respectability. But I think Haase will get the Cardinal there.

In his four years at UAB, Jerod Haase's teams went T7th, T8th, T4th and 1st in Conference USA. Like I did with the previous Stanford men's baskeball coach, I'm expecting big improvements by year three.

something new (for me): in an effort to improve the fan atmosphere near the court, a staffer went around upgrading season ticket "members" in the upper sections to loge seats. Seems like a good idea. Attendance is down, but a weekday 8 pm game on a rainy night is predictably going to be worse.
Too many traveling calls: reflects the perceived need to beat the defender with the dribble when the both are starting from a stationary position, rather than getting a driving edge by motion, screening, and passing.
the most amusing part of the evening was a time-out event in which a student has to drive the length of the floor and score a layup within 5 seconds, for a $100 prize (should be named the Jeanette Pohlen Challenge). He shot right at the end, but the judges ruled he didn't make it in time. After lusty crowd booing, a few timeouts later it was announced that the decision had been reversed and he was awarded the $100. The crowd was pleased.

Speaking of guards, what do folks know about recent commit Isaac White?

I think that booing was the loudest the crowd got all night. Woodside High band was pretty good - about as good as the full LSJUMB (football band). Both Theo and the PA announcer need to adjust their volume to the crowd size. Yelling as loud as you can when the Sixth Man and lower bowl are half full is not going to inspire much.
OMG do we need guards.

Why was Thursday designated as SuperHero night when the real super hero (aka, Tara VanDerveer) is in action tonight?

What might sum up the night best is that each of our two
point guards had 0-for-2 trips to the free throw line.

One of the axioms of college basketball is you need good guards. We have bad guards.
