2017 Starters.... - Row80Critic - 01-02-2017

Let's see those predictions for the starting offense, defense, and special teams (kicker) next year...

Re: 2017 Starters.... - washingtonismoney - 01-02-2017

sure, why not:

QB: Costello
RB: Love
FB: Marx
TE: Schultz
OL: Hamilton/Herbig/Burkett/Bright/Tucker
WR: Arcega-Whiteside
WR: Irwin
(Primary backups: St. Brown, K. Smith, Heimuli-Lund)

DE: Jackson
DT: Phillips
DE: Schaffer
OLB: Alfieri
ILB: Barton
ILB: Okereke
OLB: Kalambayi
CB: Holder
S: Reid
S: Edwards
CB: Meeks
(Primary backups: Reid will be NB, so we'll say Simmons comes in as the S in those situations. Palma. Robinson + Toohill as the next guys in OLB. No idea on DL.)

I'm assuming Solomon Thomas leaves, and making no assumptions on Wedington and Sarell. Thomas, obviously, would play a big role; and I bet both Wedington and Sarell would get a bunch of snaps as well.)

Re: 2017 Starters.... - Phogge - 01-02-2017

Can't see Tucker starting. Hall stays at LT, Bright at RT, Wilson at Casper's position. More double TE sets. Fanaika and Little (Sarell?) as ogres.

Simmons a demon on special teams. Has to play a lot on D. Perhaps he's the nickel a la Michael Thomas and blitzes a bit. Hopefully Holder and Meeks stay healthy and Murphy remains on the bench. Plays too soft. Buncom's my third corner.

Concerned about RB depth.

Speights will see a lot of action at RB, and so too will Donald Stewart at WR.  I'd like to see Jay Tyler get more opportunities.  With Schultz, Taboada, Scooter Harrington, and Kaden Smith, I fully expect Stanford to use a lot of TEs in 2017.

My money is on Michael Williams to lock down one of the starting DL positions.  The LBs and DBs won't change much other than Curtis Robinson getting more action at OLB.  I'm going to suggest Andrew Pryts gets a lot of action and wouldn't be surprised if he overtakes Ben Edwards at Safety by the end of 2017.

Re: 2017 Starters....H - winflop - 01-02-2017

OL (L to R): Bright, Herbig, Burkett, Fanaika/Wilson, Dreyer.  No way Hall keeps his job.
WR: Irwin, Arcega-Whiteside
TE: Schultz, Taboada
QB: Costello
RB: Love
FB: Marx

DE: Jackson, Cotton
NT: Phillips
OLB: Kalambayi, Alfieri
ILB: Palma, Okereke (for better or for worse)
CB: Holder, Meeks
SS: Reid
FS: Simmons/Edwards

P: Bailey
KO: Bailey
PK: Toner

Re: 2017 Starters.... - Row80Critic - 01-02-2017

Who will kick extra points and field goals?

Re: 2017 Starters.... - Phogge - 01-02-2017

Beall, Toner or Bailey.

Re: 2017 Starters.... - ChicagoCard - 01-02-2017

I love Irwin and Arcega-Whiteside but who is going to be the deep threat, even if not one of the top 2 or 3 receivers in terms of playing time? Brandt-Sims? He was in for at least one play in the first half of the Rose Bowl but not sure he played a down this season.

IBS did play this season.  Not much but he played.  If that was your point. CV

Trent and JJ have both run 4.5 don't discount them as at least at times deep treats.

And though I hate to recognize any Kal guys, there was also Johnny Olszewski... the "other" Johnny O.

His 1955 Bowman card was cooler.

Mostly think this is the most likely starters list at this point.
A few things.

Would have to guess Palma over Barton at ILB, but also would guess a continuing heavy rotation there.

It's mostly mystery about the new starters at OL and DL. Hamilton seems a good guess for day 1, but no way to know much without seeing practices or having a real conversation with coaches. Even less info about DL. In both cases a new face seems likely.

More on the OL responding to various posts on this thread.
- While it's far from clear, I tend to agree on Tucker. Last year he played well enough, and this year he has been injured enough, that I tend to think he has at least a good chance to start if healthy.
- The interior was definitely better than the tackles, but Burkett had lots of struggles - particularly over the difficult part of the schedule. Jones of Notre Dame really abused him with several head up bull rushes that just overwhelmed Burkett. But, he seemed to get better and I don't see an obvious replacement.
- Much of the OL problems (but not all) were playing together issues. Perhaps this is to be expected with 3 new OL - 4 at new positions, lots of injuries so we couldn't keep a particular line together, etc. With only one guy leaving, there is a shot to have this much more ironed out and we could see the 2016 2017 improvement look something like 2014 2015; but that doesn't happen automatically and it is also true that the returning starters aren't as individually talented as what we had two years ago.

As always, the big two questions are OL and QB.
With positive answers there, the team has a chance to be very good.

I agree QB is a big question, but I think there are more questions - and bigger concerns - about ILB than OL.
