WBB: Stanford 71 George Washington 52 - 81alum - 12-20-2016

Preliminary:

After the disappointment in Tennessee, can the team snap out of its funk and beat a pretty good George Washington team?  GW is ranked 54 by Sagarin--they are kind of in the ballpark of Washington State which is 47 (Tennesee is 26 and Gonzaga is 25).  They are 7-4, although 0-3 against top 50 teams.  They are coached by first year coach Jennifer Rizzotti who has deep UConn ties.  They have some good players, including Lexi Martins who led the NCAAs last year in double-doubles.  They start a 6'5" center.  They do have a 45% three point shooter, but she does not start and has played sparingly.  Caira Washington, a 6'2" senior forward, is the leading scorer at 12.6 ppg, and leads the nation at more than 70% shooting.

Overview:

A horrible first quarter, and excellent 2nd quarter, a bad third quarter, and a good fourth quarter allowed our streaky team to come away with a 19 point win.  Kudos to Brittany McPhee with 21 and some amazing fast breaks.  Give GW credit for out rebounding us and out hustling us-- 47 to 36.  Tara will not be happy about that.

Flow of the Game:

GW came out playing a zone--why wouldn't they after watching the Tennessee tape--and it once again discombobulated us.  It was clear from the game and from the GW coach's pregame interview that taking McCall out of the offense was their number one priority.  Teams now know that if they can neutralize McCall, they have a chance since our three point shooting is so streaky.  It seemed to work pretty well, keeping us to a paltry 11 points in the first quarter.  Also helping were a plethora on non-calls.  Bri and Britt each had a couple of baskets but Erica did not have a field goal in the quarter.  Meanwhile GW had an enormous number of offensive rebounds--their specialty.

The second quarter was something altogether different.  We erupted for 30 points and began with a 14-1 run.  Many of them were fast break points.  It turns out that all those O-boards for GW come at a price, and we got behind their defense several time.  Brittany had several beautiful fast breaks and three point plays.  If we could bottle the Tennessee first quarter or the GW second quarter and pour it out at will, we would be an offensive juggernaut.  The refs did begin to call the game closer, something that would have consequences in the second half.

The third quarter was atrocious.  They went on an 8-0 run to start it, and our half court offense looked stagnant.  GW was playing man now, and we still looked stagnant.  Alanna and Erica got some ticky tack fouls--Alanna eventually fouled out and Erica had to sit for quite a few minutes.  Nadia played well on offense, and showed she can take it to the basket from the elbow and score.

The fourth quarter started poorly as well, and with six minutes in the game, GW had cut the lead down to eight points.  Bri made her jumper at the other end, then Britt assisted Erica for a layup, and we began to rebuild the lead.  Britt and Erica made free throws, Bri another jumper, and Marta a layup and we put the game away.  Still, to have the game in doubt halfway through the fourth quarter is not a sign of dominance.  But a win is much better than the alternative.

Performances:

As GW focused on Erica, Britt ran wild in the first half.  21 points on 8-11 shooting.  Throw in 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and a block and you can only conclude that this was one of her better performances.

Erica wound up with a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, but she was only 4/12 field goal shooting--not good at all for a post.  GW simply sold out to stop her.

Nadia Fingall from the bench had 11 points, and they were important points when the game was on the line--not in garbage time, with 4/7 shooting, sometimes with Erica on the bench and the defensive focus on Nadia.  She had 3 fouls, but one was hardly a foul.  We would not have won this game without Nadia.

Bri deserves more credit than she has been getting of late.  She had 10 points on 5/7 shooting and looked very good on offense.  She also had 2 assists and 3 steals and only 1 turnover.

Marta deserve a shout out for taking two jumpers and making one trey.  We need to see her doing much more of that.  She was only 2/8 for 7 points, and she had 3 assists to 2 turnovers.

Karlie did not have her best game, going just 1/6 and 1/5 from three point range.  We need her shooting touch back.  When a team can triple team McCall and shut down Karlie as well--bad things will happen.

Alanna gave us needed minutes on defense, but fouled out with 1 basket.

Conclusion:

The GW announcers mentioned that Tara had told them that the main problem at Tennessee was not complicated--it was shooting.  Suggests the strategy and the defense were OK, but we simply need to drain more jump shots, especially treys.  This was the story of the Gonzaga loss too.

This road trip has taught us that we have a long ways to go to be a dominant Pac 12 team.  We need Kaylee back for her rebounding and defense, and we could use Anna healthy as an alternative at point, if she is up to it.  We really need our three point shooting to become consistent.  But the good news is that Tara's teams have always improved relative to the opposition the longer the season goes on.  Right now, I'm not confident.  I suspect we would lose to at least 4 other Pac 12 teams if we were playing them this week.

This is the link to the A10 site:

They seem to have replays etc. available without a subscription.  I'm not really sure if we will get access to our game without one.  I remember a few times in the past in similar situations where conference pay per view streamed it free at the last minute--maybe some kind of contractual thing with Stanford Athletics.  So it might be worth checking to see if it is available before shelling out your money.

All the links seem to work.  I don't have picture yet but have audio from the gym and a GW screen that looks like it is getting ready to start.

Let's hope it is a happier game to watch than the last!

Edit: Yes!  The video came up at 4:00 sharp for the national anthem.

But the picture went down for the announcements.  I guess we shall see if it comes backup for the game.  Introductions now.

Wow, what a sloppy game.  I've watched for about 10 minutes and we've scored 1 point and committed about 4 fouls.

Re: WBB: Stanford vs. George Washington today 4pm Pacific - 81alum - 12-21-2016

11-10 Stanford after one quarter.  Very poor offense.  GW should not be in this game.  Bri has a couple of baskets, so does Brittany, but they have been double and triple teaming Erica.

We have lost at least 3 rebounds by not showing enough hustle.

31-13 and the GW coach gets a T for complaining about the refs.  ;D
