Now which bowl? - Row80Critic - 11-27-2016

In terms of conference standings, Stanford is (and will remain) in sole possession of 5th place, with Washington, WSU, U$C, and Colorado all having only 1 or 2 conferences losses vs. Stanford's 3.

Stanford will most likely end up the 4th highest in the CFB rankings, behind Washington, U$C and Colorado (assuming the committee doesn't take excessive pity on Utah or WSU because they lost to quality opponents).

So if Washington goes to the Playoffs, then CO and U$C will likely take the Rose and Alamo.

That would leave WSU next up in the standings to take the Holiday Bowl, with Stanford in line for the Foster Farm Bowl.  But...the Holiday would have the option to pick Stanford if they wanted, and I'd have to think they'd consider it.  WSU would be unranked.  Stanford will be ranked. WSU is 8-4 with a loss to an FCS team. Stanford is 9-3.  WSU is on a 2-game skid.  Stanford is on a 5 game tear.  WSU has that flag at Gameday.  Stanford has actual fans that go to bowl games, including many in the area.  Stanford has Christian McCaffrey.  WSU doesn't.

I see predictions of us playing a 6-6 Indiana team in the Chicken Bowl.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd have a hard time getting too excited about that one. At least we would probably get our 10th victory although they did play Jimmy H. tough, only losing 20-10.

I wouldn't mind seeing CMAC go wild in our bowl game.

I don't think anyone would mind (except the other team). I'd also like to see how Keller Chryst does against a reasonably good defense. Not sure if Indiana qualifies as that or not.

Re: Now which bowl? - stupac2 - 11-27-2016

I've got my fingers cross for Holiday since I'll be in San Diego anyway, probably can't go to the chicken bowl this year.

Re: Now which bowl? - Spiny_Norman - 11-27-2016

If Stanford plays either Minnesota (projected to the Holiday Bowl) or Indiana (projected to Foster Farms Bowl), they would face a pretty good rushing defense.

Minnesota gave up 3.47 yards per rush. Indiana gave up 3.64 ypr.  These numbers are comparable to Washington (3.5) and Kansas St (3.61).

Re: Now which bowl? - Embo - 11-27-2016

Chicken Bowl?  For the love of god, no.

I went two years ago.  That was enough.
First of all, that's not much of a reward for the team.  A bowl a few exits down 101?  They deserve a trip in a warmer location.
Second of all, it'll have a less than exciting opponent.  We got to witness Maryland in 2014.  And they brought few fans.  A 6-6 Indiana team?
Third, I hate that name.  Foster Farms Bowl.  Yes, those T-shirts and hats with that emblazoned logo are big sellers - not.

I am hoping and praying for the Holiday.  Staying and eating near Gaslamp Quarter sure appeals to me.

I saw Wilner heavily pushing Sun for us.

By my math, that would mean Stanford would have to be passed-over to land in El Paso...

Re: Now which bowl? - Spiny_Norman - 11-27-2016

Here's an oddity - at 5-7, c.al will be eligible to fill a bowl slot since there will not be enough 6-6 teams.  But other 5-7 schools will take those slots because their APR scores are higher.  Those academically prestigious schools with 5-7 records and higher APR scores than c.al include North Texas and Mississippi State.

If the local media are correct, Utah will be picked by Foster Farms before Stanford.  Utah could and would travel to the SF Bay Area.  It is a reasonable drive on I-80 from Salt Lake City for those on a budget.  It is a super easy flight.  Even if the travel in small numbers they will do more for the tourism industries that are often linked to these bowls than Stanford types living in the area.

FWIW - the big draw for the Chicken bowl is the stadium.  The Stanford program has played in that stadium two times in the last 24 months, so not a big draw for the Stanford players.

Ignore, or discount, the stadium and the Sun Bowl is a better deal for Stanford.

FWIW2 - It really doesn't matter.  Las Vegas is bad because there is not enough time to take full advantage of the bowl training window, the others outside of the NY6 group are probably equivalent to the players and staff.

That's all fine and good, but I want to go to San Diego (as nice as El Paso might be, cough, cough...)

Re: Now which bowl? - yvonne - 11-27-2016

Well, El Paso is only two hours from Carlsbad Caverns. That's fun.

Re: Now which bowl? - 81alum - 11-27-2016

The Sun Bowl would bring back good memories from 1977, Walsh's first year,  and our victory over LSU.  Complete with Burt Reynolds doing color commentary.  (Well, that last isn't such a good memory!)

Re: Now which bowl? - winflop - 11-27-2016

Bowl options depend greatly on whether UW makes the CFP.  If UW makes it, I see us in the Holiday Bowl.  If not, probably the Sun Bowl or Vega$ Bowl.

Re: Now which bowl? - larkinforever - 11-27-2016

Here's a thought - what about 3 Pac-12 teams to New Year's Six Bowls (UW, CU, U$C)?

Right now a lot of projections have 4 Big Ten teams, which is ultimately unlikely to happen, and that opens up 1 slot.

3/4 Big Ten, 2 SEC, 2 ACC, 1 Big 12, 1 Group of Five and 3/2 Pac 12 teams for the 12 slots.

Big Ten - Ohio St, Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn St (3 of 4; loser of Wisconsin-Penn St misses out?)
SEC - Alabama, Florida, Auburn (2 of 3?)
ACC - Clemson, Florida St, Louisville (2 of 3?)
Big 12 - Oklahoma, Oklahoma St (only Oklahoma-Oklahoma St winner?)
Group of Five - Western Michigan
Pac 12 - UW, U$C, CU (if only 2 of 3 are selected, what team from above would be the 12th?)

So... Stanford to the Alamo? :)

Re: Now which bowl? - ChicagoCard - 11-27-2016

I was hoping for 3 Pac12 teams in the NY6 bowls. But unfortunately FSU beat FL. I think that means 2 ACC, there'll be Okla and Okla St from the Big12, Western Michigan, and I guess the SEC will send a team to the Sugar Bowl. That's 7 which leaves 5 slots for the Big10 and Pac12. Hard to see the Big10 not getting 3 teams in the NY6 bowls. It'll be their conf champ game winner, along with Ohio St and Michigan.

Re: Now which bowl? - dabigv13 - 11-27-2016

One complicating factor for Holiday Bowl could be the opponent- seems most of the B10 sites seem to think it's the likely destination for Iowa. Would they want to do last year's Rose Bowl match up again? I think no, but I suppose it's something of a storyline.

I don't see why not, IIRC some teams have played multiple times in the same bowl, though I can't for the life of me remember which bowl/teams. Also this would be a different bowl, so you'd really think they wouldn't care.

Now it would be something else if we had played them during the season, but I think that's happened before too.

Re: Now which bowl? - JJJ - 11-27-2016

FWIW gostanford.com also says Sun Bowl most likely. May just be reading Wilner; who knows.

Quote:Stanford has won every regular-season finale since 2008 and is 6-0 in such contests under Shaw. The Cardinal advances to a bowl for a school-record eighth consecutive season and will learn its assignment – most likely the Sun Bowl on Dec. 30 in El Paso, but with the Foster Farms, Holiday, and Las Vegas bowls in the running as well.
