Are poll voters biased against Stanford? - Roberton3 - 11-13-2016

Stanford isn't ranked in either the AP or Coaches Poll this week.  But Stanford does substantially better with computer polls: between #14 and #17 with the different versions of Sagarin's system, #12 with Massey, and a median ranking of #20 with the 60 computer ranking systems listed on Massey's page at http://www.masseyratings.com/cf/compare.htm .  Or, in a different way of looking at it, only 12 of those 60 computer rankings put Stanford outside the top 25.

(Edited to correct a typo)

Stanford is #25 in this week's ESPN Power Rankings, which may help other poll-voters take notice after the 103 - 0 win over da bears.

I don't know about football.  For women's volleyball all I read on a volleyball message board is how poll voters over rate Stanford due to reputation from previous years.  It's probably true.  If Stanford and Slippery Rock State Teachers College had similar non-conference records at the beginning of the season, Stanford would be ranked much higher.

At the Big House last weekend, the Michigan announcer also announces the Slippery Rock scores to thunderous applause.  Feels a bit odd.

Stanford (and Pac-12 teams in general) will generally fare better in computer models than in human voting because the statistical analyses put much more weight on strength of schedule. 6 of the top 22 teams in the computer consensus are Pac-12 teams.

One factor that also helps Stanford in the computer rankings is its dominant win over USC (which is #9). The computers don't distinguish between the early season version which Stanford played and the current version which is on a roll and just beat UW. In the computers' eyes that is Stanford's signature win of the season, but human voters may be correct in giving that game less weight since USC was still in disarray at that point and Darnold had yet to be appointed as the starter.

Please don't tempt the woofing gods. It will be a tough game. I think they have bowl eligibility on the line.

Michigan fans seem to think that following the Slippery Rock score is *their* tradition. I remember also getting SR scores at Stanford games 30 years ago. It's just a funny school name, and surprising that they have a football team.

Stanford is going to curb stomp ןɐɔ next week.  The Bares defense is actually worse than Oregon's.  Stanford could use the Oregon State game plan and win by a larger margin.  They are atrocious.

I recall in showing up often in the score updates on the Jumbotron/ribbon even in the last few years.

They are certainly biased against the conference. Michigan and Clemson lose to unranked teams and they're still ahead of Washington, who lost to a ranked team.

True, but you need to look at each team's overall body of work:

UW's only win against a currently ranked team was against Utah (#11).
Clemson has wins against Auburn (#18), Louisville (#3) and FSU (#17).
Michigan has wins against Colorado (#12), Penn State (#9) and Wisconsin (#6).

So UW's loss is indeed not as bad, but the other two teams each have three wins against top-20 teams, including a win each against a ranked out of conference opponent.

Shoot, I remember it 40 years ago, when I was a teenager...

McCauley had a sense of humor. Didn't feign excitement but you knew when he was excited.

Macauley had a great sense of humor and could convey his thoughts without being blatant.

I remember one afternoon in the mid-80s when Stanford was being torched by UCLA, unable to stop any deep pass. Finally a ball was overthrown to a receiver who was a good five yards clear. Macauley's call was "Pass incomplete ... (pause) ... Just".

He also had fun with the scores at times. When Nebraska was an absolute juggernaut he reported "Second quarter score from Lincoln, Colorado 7, #1 Nebraska 3". A while later came another update, "Third quarter score from Lincoln, Colorado 7 ... (oohs from the crowd) ... #1 Nebraska ... 38".
