King Solomon played a monster game. It should also be pointed out that Horrible Harry also played a great game, and I believe the most snaps in his Stanford career. He played a bunch as a Frosh, but IIRC did not start. So happy for both guys, and ourselves as fans.

A scoop-and-score to cover the spread in the waning seconds will do that for a defensive player :)Â What a way to end a hard-fought game.

Solomon Thomas may get the POW accolades, because he had more conspicuous standout plays, but upon my re-watching of the game, Harrison Phillips was the guy who saved Stanford's ass in that game. I honestly don't know if they win if he wasn't playing. He's that much better than Watkins inside.

I agree, both were very important. Thomas did have the more high profile plays, including the one where he met the UCLA RB in the backfield and threw him down. A lot of those plays were very important for inducing UCLA punts. As usual in our team, the NT's job is to occupy blockers to allow the linebackers to shoot the gaps. Still, Phillips has 4 solo tackles and 1 assist.

Whoever gets the game ball (and both those guys are certainly worthy), I'd say it needs to be shared with Ukropina. Not to jinx it, but that guy has slowly become NFL-good before our very eyes. Could have been a very different game without him...

Let's not forget Jake Bailey. This has got to be the best kicking combo in the history of the program.

Bailey had only three punts on Saturday. His average was 47.3 yards, and his longest punt was 48 yards. That means that the only two ways he could have gotten that average is by hitting punts of 47, 47, and 48 yards, or 46, 48, 48 yards. Talk about consistency! UCLA got 1 yard on punt returns. And then there was, yet again, a coffin kick that left UCLA at the 2 yard line.

It's not just this game. Bailey's season average is 45.3 yards/punt, which would put him #13 in FBS, except that he doesn't have enough punts to qualify (you need at least 3.6 punts/game). And out of 10 punts, 7 of them were inside the 20 (the coverage team -- especially Irwin -- also gets a chunk of credit there), with several of those inside the 5. That combination of distance and placement is really impressive.
One might also point out that even though Bailey doesn't have enough punts/game to qualify for the NCAA list, some fans are still complaining about Shaw punting too often.
