The play that "blew open" the Rose Bowl -

Nice piece by ESPN on the fake fumble play fake to Rector. (Sorry, I don't think ESPN videos embed).

Good stuff there. Looks like it is part of a series where coaches diagram famous trick plays. It'd be pretty cool to get a signed copy of the diagram.

With all due respect, the RB was "blown open" on the first play from scrimmage when CMac waltzed 75 yards through a previously respected defense. The Rector play was just a fillip.

No offense taken; that's why I put "blew up" in quotes, since that was ESPN's characterization, not mine.
FWIW, In theory, Iowa could have recovered from the 75 yard touchdown. Had they come back and scored on the ensuing drive, it would have been 7-7. The play that really destroyed them was Meeks pick-6. We were ahead 14-0, but Iowa was mounting its first sustained drive; it was a third and very makeable 3 from our 36 yard line, and moments later it was 21-0 in the first quarter, and the rest of the game, including the fake fumble, was a formality.

The Meeks pick 6 is when the Iowa crowd turned silent then surly.

Yeah, I think it made the Hawkeye fans irritable and ruined an otherwise enjoyable halftime show!!!!

which raises the question, why did Shaw spend that great trick play in this game, instead of saving it for a game in which it would have been more helpful? Maybe the conditions for using it (safeties coming up on the fake) occur so rarely that he couldn't resist? Maybe after "practicing it all week" he thought he had to use it?

The fake fumble was as close to twisting the knife as Shaw has ever been thus far, I think. I bet the players enjoyed the execution on national television (pun intended). And yes, Meeks's pick-six knocked the wind out of the crowd.
But for Stanford fans, that first offensive play definitely blew the game open. We knew we had a team that could execute the first play to perfection--blocking, throwing, catching--and that our plays were designed to
score. If David Shaw and co. ever bared their teeth and pinned their ears back, this first play was that sign.

Nice video.

I think first and foremost because he knew it was going to work. The Iowa safeties were cheating up to the run already, so he was pretty sure that they would bite on the fake. And they absolutely do. But that sort of thing is only going to happen when you are routinely successful in your bread and butter power running.
Secondarily, it might have been a reward to the players for working hard all year. I mean, it was fun!

I love that there are so many great TD plays that we have to debate which one blew it open.

Like the one that shouldn't have happened because Shaw "forgot" to tell Hogan not to go to Rector running deep...oh yeah.

When will a play be "more helpful" than basically icing a Rose Bowl in the first half?
Save it for say, 2031 in Shaw's Swan Song Big Game because it is just that awesome and should be one of the last plays he ever calls?
I'm sure there are similarly helpful plays stored somewhere in that War and Peace playbook of theirs.

I love the idea that there are plays lurking in the playbook that we might see later this year, or next year, or the year after that. But yes, I agree with the general sentiment here. When I saw the ESPN headline, I immediately assumed he'd be diagramming that opening touchdown to McCaffrey.

28-0 and first down on the Iowa 31, with probably at least a field goal coming without the trick play: I think the temperature was well below freezing already. IMHO

No need, Smart Football already did, in fact this was before the Rose Bowl:

And a bit OT, but the next video I got was a breakdown of the halfback option from Montee Ball to Russell Wilson in the Wisconsin vs Michigan State Big-10 Championship game in 2011.... explained by Paul Chryst... uncle of Keller Chryst.
