Says a "little bit of time" for Phillips in his press availability:

The magic words for me from Shaw in the media scrum were "no surgery". Whew!

I hope Shaw is comforted by the fact that the $C game doesn't appear to require Phillips to win...get that knee healthy!

Also noted that it was not the same knee that he injured previously. No ligament damage, no surgery, "doubtful highly doubtful" for SC but "we'll know more next week." Harrison and his family are "excited" because "it is much better news than it could have been."
No one else had serious injury. Bumps and bruises. Meeks got kicked but went right back in.
Love is being held out this week "Looks good for U SC" as he is already running. Will know for sure in a week.
With regard to the offense getting bogged down in the second half. "A little bit of them and a little bit of us." "I thought we blocked them well in the first half and didn't block them as well in the second half."
Asked about he Defensive Line rotation. It was deliberate to keep Solomon Thomas fresh for the end of the game. Said Thomas nearly had a 5 sack game. Said "it is a pretty good assumption" that Jordan Watkins will start against SC, and praised the progress he has made.Â
Commented that players like Watkins and Bright are very versatile, and this hurts them since they get moved around. But they truly excel when left at a given spot to perfect it.
On the surprise onsides, he said it was a "judgment call" and that they were not sure they were going to do it, and they had worked the regular kick return team hard to be prepared for the surprise onsides and thought they would be ready. Made it sound like they took a calculated risk and lost.
Shaw said Burns looks like a fourth year senior. Likes his decisions and check downs. Never had the fumble on the exchange during any practice--so that was a surprise. They will practice through Wednesday and then the team will get a 4 day weekend.

KSU bumrushed the onside kick with 5-6 guys vs. our two. No contest. But the football game was generally well in hand...I guess Shaw could have busted out some offensive wizardry to manufacture a score if necessary.
Note that KSU failed the second onside kick by touching the ball before it had traveled 10 or more yards past the kicking spot--they were a little lucky the first time that they didn't botch things as they did the second time. Their ST squad has stuff to sort out too (besides the missed FG).

This one is a cop-out. Probably because Shaw didn't want to really talk about it.
There were 4 minutes to go in the game and KSU was down 13. Basically KSU's only chance was to recover the kickoff. So an onside kick being likely or not we had to have the hands team out. Especially if you are a conservative coach, concentrating on what can go wrong. Gotta believe Alamar has heard about that one.

I agree. It was a mistake. Setting up a return doesn't buy you anything since a great KOR doesn't help much. At that point burning clock is more valuable than gaining points or yards. Plus, if it is sent deep you just take a knee. Worst case it is fielded at the 1 and returned to the 15, you run three times to take two minutes off the clock and punt it to roughly where KSU wound up recovering the ball anyways.
It's the first game of the season, and even the coaches are allowed to be a bit rusty.

Sounds like another Fred Dean.

Meaning no disrespect to you personally, fullmetal, I must say that I find this comment to be very foolish. SC is never a team that I would take lightly regardless of what they did against Alabama. I think that Alabama could beat most of the top 10 by a similar score.

Plus, you just know that SC will come out strong against Stanford.

No one should fault fullmetal for treating USC like a fly on a dinner table.Â
I'd be more concerned if he had showed them some respect.Â
Any respect.Â
SC ran very well against us last year--very well. But they did it mostly on the edges, especially against Anderson. Maybe we can retain Bama's Reuben Foster for the game. A few more tackles like his against--was it Justin Davis?--and SC might be forced to move some of its receivers to running back.

StanfordMatt, no offense taken. This is the only place where I can dream big about Stanford athletics. I picked Stanford to upset U$C in 2007 and haven't looked back since.
