I think Shaw is a genius -
Mick - 09-03-2016
I think Shaw got exactly what he wanted out of this game.Â
I think if he wanted to do so, Stanford could have won by four TDs. it's Shaw's pattern to go very conservative early in the season, particularly with a very long stretch of very highly ranked opponents coming up. I think he kept all of his schemes fairly basic and simple against an overmatched opponent.
The biggest question got answered...and how. I think inside, the stoic Shaw was jumping up and down and celebrating as he watched Burns complete pass after pass and after Rector got great separation and the receivers didn't drop passes and the OL pass-blocked reasonably well for a first game. Their run blocking was atrocious. I'm hopeful they gel quickly, we can't wait until the eighth game this year for them to get their act together. On the other hand, if K-State didn't know that McCaffrey was going to get the ball on every play, the OL would have looked better...;). I suspect Shaw was pushing them early, at least I hope so.
I'm hopeful that most of the problems are matters of technique and not personnel. I think that's the case with Holder, who had had coverage issues. I get the sense that the basic talent is there. Not so with Hoffpauir, who was torched badly and repeatedly.
I really enjoyed watching our punter and kickers. They are special, special players. 50 yard FG first game? No problem. Three punts inside the 20, two inside the 4? Easy peasy.
Eight sacks, thirteen points and great coverage against a mobile quarterback and fast receivers. Excellent.
In my completely nonpartisan view, I thought the flag on McCaffrey's punt return was incorrect. I also thought that KState receivers were pushing off (the announcers concurred).
WOW, were we caught by surprise by the onsides kick.
I thought I detected a whiff of not-very-classy on the part of a few K-State players. But maybe I'm just old.
#20 U$C at home after they've played Alabama and Utah State. UCLA on the road, then at Washington after a short week. WSU at home, then #10 Noter Dame on the road. Ugh. Toughest five-game stretch in college football.

I was wondering about that, tried to ask in the game thread but my phone was being a pooface. I didn't see anything that merited a flag live or on replay. It's a bit hard to get worked up about it since we still scored on that drive, though.

True freshman Curtis Robinson pushed a guy in the back on the punt return. It was really minor, but he did, and it was at the point of attack. Could have gone either way.

The other aspect of not putting it in fourth gear were the defensive rotations. It's one thing to rotate in second-string guys, but the defense took it to extremes last night: in more than a few plays the entire second-string DL was playing with a mostly second-string DB group. I suspect in more demanding games they'll blend guys a bit more (e.g. playing second-string DL with first-string DBs) and/or not rotate as much.

Before they kicked off after the safety, I actually wondered if onsides kicks were legal after a safety. How often have any of us ever seen an onsides kick after a safety? I never have. I supposed it is possible that the players may not have known it was a possibility--but shouldn't the coaches have made them aware or put in a hands team? Is it possible even the coaches thought it was not a possibility?
After safeties, you almost always see punts rather than kicks now. When they lined up to kick I think it should have sent a signal that something unusual was up.

It's a free kick which means they are free to kick however they want. Onside was K-State's ONLY play at that point. Stanford should've had the hands team out there.
And a block in the back is a block in the back. There's no gradation.

I would like to see a breakdown of how many reserves got significant time.

To give the KSU guy credit, it was a beautiful onsides kick. Even if we were prepared for it I don't know if we would have gotten it.
I had a good view of the kick from down low on the 40. It's hard to see from this video how high the KSU guy leapt above all the other players to grab the ball:
