Tennis Recruit CiCi Bellis - paloalto - 07-20-2016

Stumbled onto this article.  Don’t know a thing about her.

http://www.tennis.com/pro-game/2016/07/bellis-17-plans-play-collegiately-stanford-university/59614/#.V5AZszUnfE8

“Bellis reached No. 1 in the world as a junior player.”

“She made it clear that she wants to play her college tennis at Stanford.”

Re: Tennis Recruit CiCi Bellis - oldalum - 07-20-2016

Is Stanford's return policy still that an undergraduate who leaves can return at any time, without reapplication, and finish a degree? If so, I hope Lele and Frank are implanting the notion that one year would be a great investment in the future for her. She's almost certainly a one-and-done, but it would be great to have her for that one. She'd easily be the best player in women's college tennis that year.

A number have returned recently so yes.  My bet the coaches know this. 😄

Help me understand that.  There's no requirement that she play college tennis for any length of time before turning pro, there's no draft, etc.

Or is the theory that she's locking up her right to return and finish her education after her pro career is over?  If so, good move on her part and I'll enjoy her for as long as she's on campus.

Re: Tennis Recruit CiCi Bellis - needle - 07-21-2016

How does eligibility work in college tennis when a player like Bellis has already been winning prize money?

It would be great to see her at Stanford. However, she is clearly a better player right now than her No. 200+ ranking, so in a few months she will have to decide between Stanford and a lucrative pro career (the player she just beat, No. 38 in the world, has earned over $500k so far this year, and Bellis would surely get some decent sponsorship/endorsement money as well).

Re: Tennis Recruit CiCi Bellis - BobK - 07-21-2016

Bellis has not received prize money.  She could be a one and done.

This source indicates that she has won titles in pro tournaments:

Did she decline the money to maintain amateur status and presumably NCAA eligibility?

Geaux Cardinal!

Not sure if she has, but it's pretty routine for amateurs to decline prize money at that level of play.

I'm okay with successful one-and-dones who return for their degrees and invest in the university.  Everyone has their own way of giving back :)

The latter. I'm just predicting that if she comes, she'll dominate her freshman year, then turn pro. Like McEnroe did.

I'm hoping she'll want the college and team experience for a year, with the right of return.

Re: Tennis Recruit CiCi Bellis - 2006alum - 07-21-2016

Yes, CiCi has been declining prize money for years. Her dad works in PE and they live in Atherton, so I don't think the prize money she's making as a 17-year-old will make or break the family. My guess is they view Stanford as a 40-year investment, and even if she does well as a pro, she'll still need something else to do in 10 or 15 years. To this end, it would be entirely smart to enroll for a year, turn pro, and then be able to return to Stanford later on. She's fun to watch and has tremendous fighting spirit, so she'd be a terrific addition to the Farm.

Just saw the second set of her loss to Venus Williams in the QFs of the Bank of the West Classic (4-6, 1-6).

Venus was playing very well and overwhelmed Bellis in the second set, but it looked like Bellis had some nice power. Obviously, she won't have to face anyone of Williams' caliber in college.

Sweet!  Looking forward to her kicking butt at Stanford for between 1 and 4 years (sounds like 1, but who knows)

Great news

Re: Tennis Recruit CiCi Bellis - cardfan77 - 07-22-2016

This is great!  Will she be the #1 player?

Re: Tennis Recruit CiCi Bellis - oldalum - 07-22-2016

Yes. Our (next-year-) number 1 and 2 players will have graduated, and Bellis will almost certainly be the best player in college W tennis her freshman year. Hopefully we can field a strong enough team behind her to win the team championship.

Re: Tennis Recruit CiCi Bellis - gasdoc51 - 07-23-2016

The #1 recruit for 2018, Liu, is interested in Stanford and UCLA and a top recruit for 2019, Mossmer is also interested in Stanford. Hopefully these recruits will all make it through the magical door.
