Post your letters to Muir... - winflop - 03-13-2016

I waited until after the brackets are announced.  Somehow I didn't think he would be paying much attention until then.

Dear Mr. Muir,

I sincerely hope you finally agree that it is time for a change in leadership of men’s basketball.

We have previously spoken by phone after prior seasons.  In those conversations you have told me that you thought the team was close to making the NCAA tournament, or that if it weren't for injuries they would have had a better year, or that one-and-dones make it harder to compete at the same level as in the past.  I think that after eight years of under-performance and four under your tenure, the time for excuses is over.

The football program has shown the extent to which a change in leadership can have such a significant, positive impact not only on the program but beyond it.  I sincerely hope that you can appreciate the need to make a similar change in men’s basketball so that the program has the opportunity to regain some of the stature it held for nearly a quarter-century.

As I’ve stated to you previously, I think very highly of Coach Dawkins as a person.  He’s a great representative of Stanford - off the court.  Unfortunately results must be delivered on the court as well, and it just hasn’t happened.  I hope that Coach Dawkins can find a role and a program where he can be successful.  I wish him nothing but the best, but I think the program is on life support and needs a new direction.

I’m not going to presume to be anywhere nearly as knowledgeable about men’s basketball as you are – that’s why you’re the AD who sits on the selection committee and I’m an avid, unapologetic supporter of Stanford Athletics.  All I can represent to you is the view of an alumnus, who like many fellow alumni, takes enormous pride in how Stanford Athletics as a whole keeps the STUDENT in student-athlete and delivers at the highest levels both athletically and academically.  I take no pride in asking you to make this change – I’d much rather be writing to ask you to extend the contract of a men’s basketball coach who has continued the great track record of his predecessors who turned a moribund program into a national power.  I know in my heart that this program can be just as successful as any other Stanford Athletics program.  Unfortunately, I believe in my heart that a change in leadership is needed for it to happen.

Muir wants Stanford to continue to miss the tournament so he can involve himself in all selection committee decisions without conflicts of interest.

Very well written and heartfelt, WinFlop.  I hope he responds with action and not words.  We are now past the point of making excuses.    As stated weeks ago, I'm very curious as to Muir's response when/if we miss on the NIT.  The Tweet does not bode well.  I take no pleasure in saying this, but it is time for a change.

Eloquently and convincingly argued. To what email or snail mail address should we post our two cents' worth?

I'm not posting my email to Muir, but I did write and let him know that he needs to fire Dawkins.  I was respectful but clear that Dawkins has not lived up to the level of performance needed to keep his job.  Hopefully he is hearing from a lot of us.

Cheers,
Pete F.
