Stanford at the Oscars -
needle - 02-28-2016
Three nominees this year.
Quote:Better known for producing billionaire entrepreneurs, Stanford University has seen significant success in the film industry, but its alumni are the more unusual characters in Hollywood.
This year, Pakistani journalist and documentary film-maker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a Stanford alumna, is nominated for her short film about honour killing in her own country.
The composer David Lang attended Stanford as an undergraduate, and it was there that he met a replacement teacher from the University of Iowa called Martin Jenni, whom he credits for setting him on his illustrious career path.
Pixar producer Nicole Grindle, nominated for a short animation, studied for a masters in documentary production at Stanford, graduating in 1987.

Well, there's some irony for you. David Lang is a former LSJUMB member, and I seem to recall folks from the University of Iowa having a problem with the Band...

David Lang was more than just a former LSJUMB member. He was the most prolific chart arranger of all time - possibly beating out Dr. Barnes. I suspect to this day the LSJUMB is probably playing more charts by Lang than any other student.
He was also commissioned by Stanford to write an orchestral work to celebrate the university's centenial. It was called, "Aliens kidnapped me and stole my blood". Playing it was ... interesting.
