Now you know... - Redrum - 01-27-2016

...why,when the nice student who is working as part of his/her scholarship and calls up "just to make sure our contact information is up to date"  [ " you're talking to me right now. Guess the info is correct" ] finally gets around to hitting me up for $$$ for Stanford...why the answer is always "Sorry, no".  I gave every year earlier in life but it tailed off after 4 years of non-scholarship tuition/living costs for the Redrumette.

My favorite was sending a child to a private college which I did not attend, paying for everything, and getting calls from that school asking for money.  After a few times explaining that I WAS sending money already I just started saying no.

Id be a little suspicious of the cash value of that $622,000,000 in tax-deductible art.

They call; I contribute.  And drive an old car.

Part of what caused Stanford all the heartburn during the Indirect Cost controversy in the early '90s was incorrect accounting for a sailboat that was donated to the University. (Should have been booked to auxiliary athletics; was booked to the academic side; wound up in an indirect cost pool where it didn't belong. Ehhh, don't ask...) When the "damn boat" (as Pres. Kennedy referred to it) was donated, it was with the stipulation that it not be sold for two years, so the donor could put his own value on it for tax purposes; if it were sold before then, he could only use the sale price as his donor value. The value we were given at the time was $400,000. When it was sold later, it went for less than half that...

Check the headline of this article on the same subject:

In Stanford's continuing quest for respect, the struggle is real... ;)

Why is that worse? It's nice to see that certain Connecticut university's fundraising success recognized this year even if not in the headline.
