Don\'t forget ... Women\'s hoops tonight - Leftcoast - 01-20-2011

Don\'t forget tonight\'s home game:

Stanford vs UCLA, women\'s variety, both in currently ranked among the AP top 10.   UCLA comes in with a coach trained at Tennessee and hoping to prove there are two powers to be reckoned with in the Pac 10.

Stanford has steamrolled each of the Pac 10 teams they\'ve faced including a then ranked ASU squad but UCLA is also undefeated in Pac 10 play - and UCLA\'s Pac 10 wins have all come with double digit scoring margins.   It will be interesting to see if UCLA has grown enough to challenge the Cardinal at Maples.

I can\'t find the game on any TV listings so Maples or KZSU may be your only options.

There is a bullet point at the bottom of the Merc article that says Melanie Murphy was cleared to play yesterday.

A couple of things I\'ll be watching for:

(1) Stanford\'s defense.  I fully expect Stanford to pack it in tightly against a UCLA team that has very little outside shooting prowess.  IF Darxia Morris or Doreena Campbell get hot, that could change, but UCLA\'s defense needs to be working off of made baskets to be really disruptive; if they don\'t get to set up their defense, it won\'t be nearly as effective.

(2) Rebounding.  The Cardinal will have to balance wanting to get out and run before UCLA\'s defense can set up with making sure to secure the rebound before doing so.

(3) Ball handling. Understandably, the Bruins play a very Tennessee style of basketball - defense that is very physical and slaps at the ball a lot.  I don\'t think it will bother Jeanette that much, but we\'ll need some other ball handlers when she has to give it up out of traps.  Hello, Ms. Versatility Pedersen.  The other key, of course, is to punish the pressure once it\'s broken with early offense.

Looking forward to it.  Especially hoping to see Mel out there.

Makes me crazy that this game wasn\'t televised!!   A very convincing win, a good crowd at Maples and a fun, physical game.   I\'m really enjoying watching Toni play and she\'s getting better with every game.   Kayla had her best game in a while and a strong offensive performance.   She wrestled for the ball time after time.   Chiney looked great, and I was really disappointed when she came out for a long stretch due to foul trouble.   The referees seemed particularly bad tonight, but in the end they did not alter the outcome of the game.   And Mel got to play!!
