an interesting draft coming up - TrumpCard - 01-05-2016

Stanford has had 6 players drafted several times (including 2014 and 2015), but Stanford has had 7 players drafted only once (1936).  This year, Garnett, Murphy, Hooper, Hogan, Cajuste, Martinez, Shittu, Rector, Scarlett, Anderson, Whitfield and Harris all might still have NFL dreams.  I think the first 7 on my list will be drafted, tying the record from 1936 and setting the best mark for a three-year period.  Any other bets?

Re: an interesting draft coming up - TrumpCard - 01-05-2016

A follow up to my original post.  It's worth mentioning again that Stanford has had remarkable success putting guys in the pros.  In the 4 recruiting classes from 2007-2010, Stanford put 28 of the 80 guys who signed LOIs plus 3 walk-on players into the NFL.  Now, it's true that most of the 31 guys who have played in the NFL haven't gotten rich, but there are a lot of guys who have to be happy about achieving a dream.  When Shaw makes his pitch to recruits, it would not misleading to say that 35% of kids who signed with Stanford in recent classes have ended up in the NFL!

Here's a list, corrections or additions are welcome:

From the unheralded 2007 class, there were two guys drafted (Fleener and Marecic), but five more have played in the league (Baldwin, Keiser, R. Whalen, Stewart, and Masifilo).

From the small but talented 2008 class, three guys got drafted (Luck, DeCastro, and Martin), but a whopping six more have played in the league (C. Thomas, M. Thomas, Howell, Owusu, G. Whalen, and Bademosi).  I was conservative and didn't count K. Reuland since he was a transfer.

From the 2009 class, six guys got drafted (Taylor, Toilolo, Ertz, Gardner, Gaffney, Murphy), and three more have played in the league (Skov, Mauro and Hewitt).

From the 2010 class, five guys got drafted (H. Anderson, Parry, Reynolds, Yankey, and Fleming), and one more is playing in the league (Tarpley).

Was very pleased to see Tarpley intercept a pass this past Sunday. (Talk about a bad quarter for the Jets QB - I think he had four passes intercepted in the last quarter -- I know there were at least three.)

Speaking of Stanford in the NFL:

http://www.gostanford.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30600&ATCLID=210615406

Ertz had 9 catches for 152 yards
Fleener had 7 for 88 yards

Trolling a few of the various mock draft sites, I see 3-5 of our guys getting picked, none before the 3rd round.  I suspect that we will have from this class more 2016 roster players than draft picks, as per usual.

I think five for sure with Cajuste, Shittu, and Scarlett question marks.  I don't Rector has a chance of being drafted unless he rocks the combine and workout day.

It'll be the final insult to 59er injury if Scarlett gets drafted, plays in the NFL, and gets introduced as a Stanford player. Ah, that'll be the best.

The BI folks have wondered on this topic already. I wonder if he'll just follow the long tradition of C.al players and announce his high school or pee wee football team. That might be the most politic decision for him to make regardless. But it will be great if he goes with the program that brought him to the promised land.

Re: an interesting draft coming up - stupac2 - 01-06-2016

I don't think anyone in the NFL is going to bring him onto a roster based on his Cal tape. I have to think he'd introduce himself as a Stanford player. He might even have more playing time with us...

I guarantee you his profile will say Stanford and not Low APR U

Right. Isn't Russell Wilson identified with Wisconsin and not N.C. State?  Seems like the last college you attended is how you're identified.

The pro football draft has had different numbers of rounds in different years. So comparing the number of draftees in various years isn't always an apples to apples comparison. The 1936 draft had 9 rounds. Three of the 7 Stanford draftees were taken in the 8th and 9th rounds, so only 4 were taken in the first 7 rounds. The most Stanford players taken in a 7-round draft is 6, which has happened four times.

Re: an interesting draft coming up - needle - 01-06-2016

I'm a little worried how scouts will size up Shittu given his leg injury. If he checks out OK, I think he'll be drafted.

Hogan is not a lock to be drafted.

So, I feel very confident five players will be drafted. But, yeah, I could see seven.

I think Garnett is a first rounder. Anderson is a guy with some injury concerns but I'm curious how he'll test at the combine/pro day.

Re: an interesting draft coming up - BostonCard - 01-06-2016

I'm pretty sure Hogan will be drafted.  His size and athleticism will work to his advantage even if his motion and arm strength don't.  I suspect teams will think they can "fix it".  Probably a 4-6 round pick would be my guess.  That's what this site says (I swear my guess was before looking):

http://walterfootball.com/draft2016QB.php

CBS projects fifth round:

Of course, I guess that doesn't leave much of a cushion for a bad combine, so it is fair to say he's not a lock.

Weren't there fewer teams?  More useful would probably be total number of draft picks (which also varies every year in the NFL because of compensatory picks).  For example, in 1936 "Mr. Irrelevant" was pick 81.  In 2015 "Mr. Irrelevant" was pick 256.  It appears the period with the larges drafts was in the 300s in the 40s, dipped in the 60s a bit, ballooned up to the 400s in the '70s (487 in '76!!) then contracted back to the 300s in the '80s and then down to roughly the level it is now in the early '90s.
