Poor Andrew..... - dabigv13 - 01-04-2016

Looks like the regime of Pagano and Grigson is sticking around.

Re: Poor Andrew..... - stupac2 - 01-04-2016

This is so baffling. Standing pat after this year is probably the worst move Irsay has made yet, especially given the open animosity Pagano was showing to the front office in the middle of the season. How in the world did they work that out?

Re: Poor Andrew..... - larkinforever - 01-04-2016

The four-year extension is the most baffling part about it and for me falls squarely into the "you can't make this stuff up" category...

Re: Poor Andrew..... - Ratmandoo - 01-04-2016

The most most baffling thing is extending both Grigson and Pagano. One maybe but not both. The biggest issue is the animosity between the two.

This is a very bad formula for success.

Luck needs to be in Irsay's office tomorrow and tell him to get him an OL or next year is his last in Indy.

Either that or ask for a trade

Agreed.  Wish Andrew wasn't such a nice guy and would look out for his health and own interests.  A lacerated kidney is serious stuff. Using first rounders for Trent Richardson and a WR rather than building an OL is plain dumb.

Re: Poor Andrew..... - BostonCard - 01-04-2016

I feel Grigson is the bigger problem here.  Considering the hand Pagano has been dealt, he has done ok.

This is simply bizarre.  I do not understand it at all.  I really thought Pagano and Grigson are done/fired after this season.  Not a Colts fan but I feel sorry for all of Colts players from Stanford.

Maybe Irsay had a little too much to drink...... jk :P

Re: Poor Andrew..... - FarmBoy - 01-05-2016

I would have preferred to see Grigson gone over Pagano. Pagano may not be the best coach, but we have strong evidence that Grigson is a poor GM. Trading valuable picks for Trent Richardson and then signing a bunch of players at the ends of their career at WR and RB, using a first round pick at WR when the OL needs shoring up, etc. Grade A dufus.

I don't have a good feel for the power dynamic in the NFL for the players to push for trades. Can't they just franchise tag Luck until he retires if they want?

Re: Poor Andrew..... - rudruff - 01-05-2016

I think each time you franchise a player he gets a bigger multiple of the franchise amount. So theoretically you could keep him forever, but it ruins your salary cap after a couple of times.

Quote:I think each time you franchise a player he gets a bigger multiple of the franchise amount. So theoretically you could keep him forever, but it ruins your salary cap after a couple of times.

I've not found any documentation on what explicitly happens with multi-year franchise tags. One article I found (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2015/2/16/7989009/nfl-franchise-tag-2015-values-ndamukong-suh-dez-bryant) descrbes the franchise tag this way:

Quote:Each team is given one franchise tag to use per season, and it locks in a player for one year. For that year, he'll earn either an average of the top five salaries at his position, or 120 percent of his salary from the season before, depending on which one is larger.

If you expect to pay top 3 for the position dollars to your QB, you could save money by franchising them. A franchised QB would cost $18.5M in 2015 and Luck is expected to get a $20M a year contract. Actually, rereading the above rule, if a player is franchised after earning $18.5M, then the next year they would earn $22.2M and the following year $26.6M, so I guess there is a built in multiplier effect and franchising beyond one year means you're probably paying top dollar on a year by year bases. Aside from that, you have an angry superstar, you can't franchise tag any other players if it's tied up, you may alienate future free agents, etc.

$20mm for Andrew.  That is great!  I do think this thread is mis-titled, however.

Re: Poor Andrew..... - TreesAndBirds - 01-05-2016

Maybe Elway could teach Luck a little baseball so he could get an offer from the Yankees. Worked for Elway vs the Irsays.

Or Luck could take off a year and go to Stanford Law like Bill Walton did (while recuperating from an injury) and then see what is available in the NFL. He might even be able to get a  position with our football team mentoring Keller, Ryan, Costello for a year.

Yes, my tongue is mostly in my cheek, but  he may need to create some leverage if (and that's a big if) he wants out, but that may not be who he is as a person.,

Re: Poor Andrew..... - FarmBoy - 01-05-2016

I also wonder about his agent's ability to get him the deal he should. If I recall, he signed with his uncle or other family member who essentially had never been an agent before. For the rookie deal, that's pretty easy to manage, but now he's got to negotiate the best deal possible, coming off an injury year in which Luck didn't play very well and in a team environment that despite the extensions doesn't feel very stable or well managed. This is where a guy like Steinberg makes is cut.

Re: Poor Andrew..... - Bruce Wang - 01-05-2016

I hope the Hamilton County prosecutor is looking into this.  Irsay is obviously violating the terms of his plea agreement.  The man is smoking crack again.

All I can say is OL!  Will be watching closely.  Luck's legacy may be at stake

Forget his legacy. His life, seriously, may be at stake. How many QBs did they go through this season? And Andrew already with a lacerated kidney?
