I think Chris Peterson is a good fit for Stanford but we can\'t forget about Roman or Shaw, Fangio or possibly Belloti.  

My short list goes along the lines of this (in no particular order)
Greg Roman
David Shaw
Chris Peterson
Vic Fangio
Mike Belloti

I heard some reference to Todd Graham as a possible candidate.  He is at Tulsa now and Rice before that.  He has had success at both schools.

I don\'t think Tom Williams has done enough at Yale to warrant a strong look.  Also we had a terrible experience with our prior Ivy League hire.

First time poster here.  Just found this board and I am a brobdingnagian Stanford football fan.  I am really hoping we can get Chris Peterson of Boise State.  I think he would be a great fit.  Failing that, I hope for Shaw or Roman.

Shaw and Roman - Redrum - 01-08-2011

Don\'t know anything about the internal candidates except:

Vanderbilt looked and Roman and didn\'t like what they saw.   Could mean nothing.  Vanderbilt is a serial train-wreck.

In every interview with David Shaw,  he comes across as a very talkative, enthusiastic kid.   My question would be whether he has the gravitas to be unquestionably the force that shapes the staff and team.   Or will he always be the guy everybody likes?

And, of course, there\'s this:  number of winning football staffs I have assembled in my life = zero.

Has anyone taken a look at Shaw? (I seem to remember he interviewed with San Jose State, but probably a good thing for Shaw\'s career that didn\'t happen.)

I read a report saying the some of the players approached Bowlsby and requested that Shaw be the next head coach.  I forget where I read it unfortunately, so I can\'t post the link.  Regardless take it with a grain of salt, as with all things Luck/Harbaugh-related.

Also, Adam Schefter of ESPN (one of the least reliable sources on anything Luck/Harbaugh-related) is saying that Fangio might join Harbaugh... which actually makes it seem more likely to me that he\'s going to stay (within hours of Adam Schefter saying that Harbaugh\'s most likely destination was a return to Stanford, Harbaugh signed with the 49ers, and that\'s just the most recent of his errors).

We just need to keep our assistant coaches. We should definitely raise their salaries by $500K at the least.
Our main priority is to keep the assistants, then go after a top flight head coach.

I\'m conflicted.  If we bring in someone from outside, he would probably want to hire his own staff or the assistant coaches themselves may not think want to stay for whatever reason.  If we want continuity, our best bet is to make an internal hire.

Bringing in say Boise St.\'s Petersen would be a major coup and probably turn out great in the long term, but he\'s had a lot of success and runs the spread, which is very different from the pro-style offense we run now.  I almost feel we owe it to Andrew Luck to do whatever we can to help him and the team be successful next year.  Then again, with all the talent we have on the team right now, this might be our best chance to bring in a proven head coach like Petersen...

I already miss Harbaugh :sigh:
