BobK - 11-19-2015
The other tread thoughts on the season turned a bit away from any 2015-16 MBB so we start over.
Tonight we play SMU a ranked team on National TV. This will be brobdingnagian for us. Will we win and get all the confidence that comes from winning or?? Will Walker be back and how does he fit in?Â
One time Stanford recruit went to Dook, SEMI OJELEYE, is on the team but not yet eligible after transferring from Dook

Any word on whether Marcus Allen will play? Heard rumor he might. SMU guards have serious speed advantage and having him back would help, even he is if rusty on offensive end.

I'll take whatever was supposed to be on the other side of the "or".

Sadly I was right. I'd be more forgiving if the Stanford players on the court were true & redshirt freshmen. But every player getting PT is in at least his second year of playing (Humphries, Travis) or has been in the program for at least two full years. There's really no excuse other than lack of talent or lack of coaching for the ridiculous number of turnovers and complete lack of weakside help on defense. Regardless of which one it is (or both), it's on Dawkins.
And before 76 goes on another rant about me not being a fan, I'll write this again - I don't take pleasure in being this critical of any Stanford coach, but I call em like I see em. My interest is in the success of the program, and even in the year this team went to the Sweet 16 I haven't seen evidence that Johnny Dawkins can develop and recruit, develop, and lead a team to the level and consistency of performance that is necessary to be in the upper half of the Pac-12 year in and year out. Maybe my filter is so biased at this point that I can't see it, but I think Dawkins' record support my point of view.

Last night was the first time I got to watch this year's team. I've seen enough already.
We were playing against a team not only on postseason ban, but cut off from all contact with its head coach until its 10th game of the season. They've been relegated to playing out this season for stuffs and giggles. And yet we not only were 6-point underdogs to them at home, but got straight up sabooed. How, and why, when they don't even have a tourney berth in March to play for? Because they have developed a culture of winning that Dawkins has never been able to replicate here, even with his Sweet Sixteen team.
Looking forward, we have at least 16 games to play against teams that are as good as SMU or better. The Pac-12 has 6 or 7 legitimate contenders for a place in the NCAA bracket. Conference play is going to be BIBLICAL.
One year from now today, I'd like to see Steve Kerr coaching our outfit here. He has proven that he can win all kinds of games, he would hardly have to move, we have the money to land him, and Dawkins, God bless him, has recruited talent to our roster that Kerr could go somewhere with. Oh, and perhaps I should mention that he wins games.

Last night's performance was bad enough on its own. There's no need to make up numbers to make it look worse. SMU was ranked 26th in the most recent AP Poll. There are four teams from the PAC-12 ranked ahead of them and we'll play a fifth in Villanova who's ranked 11th. Saying we'll play at least 16 games against teams that are as good as SMU is just flat out inaccurate.
Lastly, I'm pretty sure the Steve Kerr comment was made tongue-in-cheek but I can never be too sure given the tenor of this board these days. Suffice it to say that the coach of the defending world champions is not leaving the NBA to coach a college team.

I thought Kerr already had a gig. Though maybe when he goes back, we could nab Luke Walton? I'm not sure how I'd feel about pulling in a Wildcat, but it would be someone who has head coaching experience (and has done a good job as interim, if the Warrior's hot start is any indication), and knows the Pac-12. OTOH, I would hazard a guess that he will have NBA teams calling, and probably aspires to be an NBA coach.

Thanks for teaching me a new verb, SamAtoms1980. Is it synonymous with getting catoosed? I am curious about its origin.

If we're going to target an NBA assistant coach we should shift our sights about 400 miles to the south and look for one wearing purple and gold.

I'll come right out and say I love Mark Madsen, and would love to see him coach successfully at Stanford. But right now, men's basketball needs a Jim Harbaugh, not a David Shaw; someone who can come in and turn the program around after the malaise we've had for the last decade or so. If that's Mark, great, but I'd be fine with it being a non-alum who comes in for four or five years, returns us to NCAA glory and then leaves for greener pastures. Right now, an ability to turn the team around is more important than being a beloved former player with strong Stanford roots.

Right there with you, BC. I'd be willing to bet that Madsen has a little EUTM in him to break the malaise you describe. They didn't call him Mad Dog for nothing.

Don't have to get, or even go after Steve Kerr specifically but that's how high we should aim. Looking for a Jim Harbaugh type is an attractive track but depends on some good luck. Even upon assembling his rocketlike track record at San Diego, there was no guarantee that Harbaugh would make Stanford football a nationally renowned brand. Of course, if we let the rest of the Pac-12 leave us in the dust then we may well be constrained to a roll of the dice.

Heh, that comes from my pre-sports-fan days. Cf. "What is a Juggalo" from Insane Clown Posse's Great Milenko album.

I don't see how Muir could attract anything above a roll of the dice, unless it was a former player. I think if Maddog had been interested in the job he might not have left after just one year as an assistant here. Seems he's more interested in NBA coaching
Other former players in the college coaching ranks include Eric Reveno & Nick Robinson. Any others? I wouldn't hire Robinson his record at Southern Utah is pretty bad. But Rev?

I loved Rev as much as any other ex-player and he's a great guy but his coaching record at Portland is a little lacking at 128-158 overall. That even pales compared to Dawkins' record.

I tend to agree but I just don't know if that's as much a function of him or the school and readily admit I don't know how to go about finding a "diamond in the rough" which is what I think Muir will need to do.

Wow nice find garvin. And I agree with you why has he been in NAIA for that long with that kind of record? Have to believe some bigger programs have come calling more than once.

I've watched Pilot basketball more than anyone should because of my daughter. He's coached there a long time and they have been atrocious for about as long. Whatever it is, he hasn't gotten it done. That would not be a good hire. Dawkins is better.
