Oregon Analysis thread -

Last week Oregon put up 777 yards of offense, breaking their record. That is a lot of good Oregon teams that this one surpassed. 477 of that was rushing. Royce Freeman is putting up gawdy numbers on the ground, and Vernon Adams is healthy and is finally looking like all the Oregon qbs of old. In short, the Oregon offense is looking as good as the best Oregon offenses of the past.
The Oregon defense....that is something else. They are 116th in scoring defense.Â
At the beginning of the season we expected Oregon to be our major competition in the North, but with their losses I think there has been a tendency to breathe a sigh of relief as if they were no longer such a threat. But with Adams healthy, I think we get an Oregon team that is very, very different from the team that lost three games.Â
I am positive our offense can score on their defense. But it sure looks like their offense can score on any defense. So it should be a high scoring game, with the outcome possibly determined by who makes the most drive-ending mistakes. Turnovers, penalties, settling for 3 instead of 7, etc.Â
I am worried about winning the game, but if we have national playoffs on the mind, we need to dominate them and not just beat them. That can only be done if our defense plays especially well and our offense controls the ball for very long stretches. I am also worried about injuries, especially to Elijah Holder. I hope he can play.

Yeah, this game could be a carbon copy of the 2009 game, with hopefully the same results.
One thing is for sure, we can no longer sneak up on the Ducks; our game is one they point to.

You don't need to sneak up on the Ducks; you just need to give your guys the ball in a little space. The Ducks have the worst tackling secondary we've ever seen--when they take good angles. I've seen the fabled Charles Nelson misread more runs and miss more tackles, in just the three quarters I've seen him play, than I've seen Whitfield and Lloyd miss all year--combined.Â

Against good to very good defenses, Oregon has been slowed down. They put up 28 on MSU, 20 on Utah, and 26 on UW.
Stanford will hold Oregon to under 30 as well because Stanford's defense is on par with MSU, Utah, and UW, and Stanford's offense will limit the number of possessions the floats have.

Oregon ranks anywhere from bottom 3rd quartile to bottom of the barrel in just about every defensive statistic. And remember that includes all the lower tier FBS teams (128 total). Their defense is a sieve.
Their offense is not as talented as in years past but it can still put up points. Better defenses have kept them under 30, and I expect Stanford to be able to do the same, not only because their defense is also good, but because the offense is going to have its way. I expect the TWU will lead a ground & pound attack that scores on almost every possession and keeps the Quack Attack on the sidelines for 2/3 of the game.

Michigan State did play them with a healthy Vernon Adams, but Oregon out gained MSU and MSU barely won--would not have if it were not for two Oregon turnovers. Adams lit them up for more than 300 yards, although MSU did hold Freeman in check.
In the other two losses Adams did not play or played only a few plays. His absence allowed WSU and Utah to key on shutting down Freeman. We are not going to be playing that team.
The Michigan State game is a better indicator. Or look at ASU, which turned into an arcade game.
I think the 2009 game may be an apt comparison.

Conversely, even though this isn't the Oregon of years past, the Ducks can no longer sneak up on us. This is a game our guys have had circled since last year, and they know it isn't a real season until they've beaten Oregon.

I wanted to put this somewhere, this seems as good as any:

One thing that I found amusing was this bit:
Quote:At some point this week, there will be tweets and blog posts about Oregon's uniform choice. Stanford will be the team in red jerseys with a block "S" on its helmets.
Anyone think we'll wear black for this game? I doubt we do it for Big Game, and while the ND game is likely bigger for our season, a win this weekend clinches the north for us. That's a pretty big deal and could justify the black alternates.

Stanford has worn black for one regular season game in each of the last five years, so I
think we will see black jerseys at one of the remaining games. I don't think it will be the Big Game, out of respect for tradition. So that leaves Oregon or Notre.Dame. My guess is that we will wear black against Notre.Dame, but that's just a guess. Stanford is undefeated in black:
2010 Wake Forest  W, 68-24
2011Â UCLAÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â W, 45-19
2012 Duke        W, 50-13
2012Â UCLAÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â W, 27-24 (conference championship game)
2013 Washington   W, 31-28
2014 Washington St. W, 34-17

Wow! Just think, if we had worn black every game we would be approaching our fifth undefeated season in a row?

Shaw's refusal to choose the all blacks for all home games cost us the Utah and USC games last year. Indefensible. Tradition for tradition's sake--heaven help us all.
