Aragorn's speech at the Black Gate: - Redrum - 11-08-2015

"I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me.

A day may come when the courage of Men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day.

An hour of wolves and shattered shields when the Age of Men comes crashing down, but it is not this day!

This day we fight!..."

Well worth reading: A Kal Be.ar's equivalent, but with more insight and more optimism in spots:

"You know what is the primary problem with our football program. I'll give it to you. Sandy chose wrong. Period. That is 95% of it..."

A couple of applicable parts relative to Stanford in there.  I get a twist in the gut thinking about Bernard Muir making a hire to replace David Shaw.  Never hired a top-tier coach for a top tier program in his life.  Not his fault, but the self-flagellation aside, our Kal man shows how a few bad choices, or one bad choice means everything.

In Sandy's defense, it's not like her other top choice has been lighting up in Boulder.  At the time those were the two "best" coaches that Low APR U could attract.

I think if Shaw leaves, Stanford will be a MUCH more attractive job than Low APR U was three years ago.  I don't have confidence in Muir to make the right choice, but he will be choosing between higher quality candidates.

It's not quite clear if Barbour chose Dykes over McIntyre of if McIntyre chose Boulder. Both were two of the hottest names that year - pretty much at the top of the Group of 5 coaches looking to move up. There are other routes to go, of course, but outside of possibly losing out to Colorado, it's not that clear c.a.l. couldn't hire its choice for the job.

I'd also note that your comment on the Stanford job vs c.a.l. seems to be a bit of an understatement. Even for a coach that doesn't want to deal with those pesky academic side-issues, c.a.l. suddenly doesn't have an advantage (though different issues on that front).

Do we think that the ability to hire a coach in a skill? It doesn't really seem like it to me. I mean, you can certainly be bad at it for various reasons (Pat Haden sure seems to be), but I don't think you can really be good at it besides getting lucky. Even established coaches that have had success elsewhere can fail in the wrong environment, and I'm not sure it's for reasons that are predictable with any certainty.

So I wouldn't be worried about Muir. Though I also doubt Shaw is leaving any time soon, so I'm very much not worried about Muir.

Think the M.O. on Bowlsby was that he was good at hiring football head coaches but a screwup at basketball (his hires in Iowa fit that pattern).

Given that Low APR U is trying to have a more academically-oriented football & basketball programs, they would be looking for the same kind of coaches as Stanford.  Is there any doubt how disparate the candidate pools would be if both jobs were open this January?
