Week 11 Polls - stupac2 - 11-08-2015

Not that any of them matter, but we're starting off this week with the Coaches Poll: http://sportspolls.usatoday.com/ncaa/football/polls/coaches-poll/2015/11/

We're #7. A few teams fell but ND jumped us to #6. Utah is #13, NW #24, UCLA #18 (tied with FSU) and USC is top in "others receiving votes", so #26 if that were a thing.

Re: Week 11 Polls - winflop - 11-08-2015

I'm pleasantly surprised to see our boys at #7.  I was particularly surprised to see LSU fall that far.  Yeah they got creamed by Alabama, but the Tide are arguably on of the two best teams in the country right now (sure as hell isn't tOSU or Baylor).  Same for Florida, although I hadn't thought about the negative impact a 9-7 win at home over a crappy Vanderbilt team can have.

Also surprised that our boys leapfrogged Iowa.  The Hawkeyes haven't played as tough a schedule, but they've played some quality teams (Pitt, Northwestern, Wisconsin) and they did to Northwestern what Stanford just did to Colorado.  I think you could pretty easily argue that Iowa is the best team in the B1G, not tOSU.  tOSU has only beaten one team with a winning record (Penn St, at home).

Re: Week 11 Polls - washingtonismoney - 11-08-2015

Iowa's not a good team -- they're an OK team with a good record. I'd pop off and say they'll get exposed at some point, but they've got Minnesota, Purdue, and Nebraska left on the schedule.

Perhaps, but based on body of work I'd take them over Ohio State.

I mean, I suppose it depends on how you define body of work. But nearly every computer system has Ohio State not just ahead of Iowa, but well ahead of them.

Here's the AP: http://collegefootball.ap.org/poll/2015/11

Looks pretty similar, with us at 7, ND at 6, Utah's 10, UCLA 18, NW 24.

Re: Week 11 Polls - BostonCard - 11-08-2015

Looking at Ohio State's "body of work", it is pretty pitiful.  Their best win is probably 7-3 Penn State; their second best win might be 6-3 NIU and Western Michigan.  Other games they've played:

4-5 Virginia Tech
2-8 Hawaii*
4-5 Indiana
2-7 Maryland*
3-6 Rutgers
4-5 Minnesota

In other words, they have exactly 1 win over a power-5 team with a winning record.  They're the only Sagarin top-10 team that has not faced a top-30 team. The good news is that after Illinois, they face Michigan State and Michigan and likely Iowa, to close out the season, so they will have three more wins (possibly four if Illinois wins their last two) over Power-5 teams with winning records.

But their "body of work" is a joke.

Indiana was their last close game, right? They've taken care of all these weaklings, at least.

Exactly my point BC.  By contrast, Iowa has wins over
Pitt (6-3)
Northwestern (7-2) #24 AP
Wisconsin (8-2) #23 AP

They have played a decent schedule.  Ohio State's schedule is complete garbage other than Penn State.

Re: Week 11 Polls - washingtonismoney - 11-08-2015

Sagarin:

Ohio State SOS (68)
Iowa SOS (56)

Really not *that* different.

Re: Week 11 Polls - washingtonismoney - 11-08-2015

Ranked #6 in the crucial EDSBS poll:

Quote:6. Stanford. 42-10 winners over Colorado. That lone loss to Northwestern looks slightly less bizarre now that the Wildcats are 7-2, and no, no, you are not allowed to go look how they got to 7-2. Just don't. It ruins this whole argument.

I'm really surprised it's that close.

Meanwhile...
Baylor 89
Oklahoma St 61
TCU 37 (WTF????)
Oklahoma 58

I was just talking with a longtime fan of Michigan who tends to glass-half-empty feelings toward his UM alma mater.  He is 100% convinced that UM will beat tOSU at the Big House in a few weeks.  He thinks tOSU is the most overrated team in the country.
