Playoff rankings -

We are 11; Utah is 12. Northwestern and UCLA are in the 20-25 range.

ND hasn't been mentioned yet, which somehow puts them in the top 6??

The rankings are stupid, but they don't matter.

All the better for us when we beat them.

Interested in the top 10....sadly no ESPN at my hospital but BC's must be better equipped?
11 does not portend well....

Yeah, I got to watch MNF on call last night, but I'm "watching" it online.

With four games -- including one against ND -- and a potential conference championship game still to come, I wouldn't be too worried about being #11 at the moment.
After this weekend, either LSU will have one loss or Alabama will have two. I think we should root for LSU. Further, Clemson plays FSU. That could be a stumbling block. Ohio State still has Michigan and Michigan State on its schedule.
Re: Playoff rankings -

1) Clemson
2) LSU
3) tOSU
4) Alabama
5) UDFG
6) Baylor
7) Michigan State
eight) TCU
9) Iowa
10) Florida

So I'm watching the show. Herbstreit is making the STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE MATTERS MOST argument. I don't buy this argument, but it'd be nice if everyone decided this was true.
Put it this way: Stanford's...6,7? if it replaces Northwestern with, I dunno, Sacramento State (and the rest of the season plays out the same way.)
Re: Playoff rankings -
French Rage - 11-03-2015
Basically, the undefeateds and the one-loss teams with higher ranked losses (ND to Clemson, Florida to LSU, Alabama to Ole Miss) are ahead of us.
Re: Playoff rankings -
dabigv13 - 11-03-2015
So lots of SEC respect (bad for us, as it continues to raise the possibility that a two loss champ gets a spot), lot of UDFG respect (most likely related to Clemson at number 1) which is good for us. Big 12 without a lot of respect at this stage, also good for us as it seems like a one loss Big 12 champ might be below us. The fact that Clemson is at number 1 and Florida at number 10 is perhaps a negative, as I suspect it indicates a one loss ACC champ FSU jumps us. Positive that Northwestern still in the top 25.
We'll that's my reading of the tea leaves. Too far out to really matter obviously.

Alabama lost at home to the 18th ranked team. Stanford lost on the road to the 22nd ranked team, but Alabama is 7 spots higher than Stanford.
They said Alabama's SOS is #3. What is Stanford's SOS?
Re: Playoff rankings -
BostonCard - 11-03-2015
The obvious:
1) we have to win out; that would take care of UDFG
The less obvious:
2) I think at this point, the best bet would be for LSU to win out, which would pretty much ensure they clinch a #1 spot and no other team from the SEC is in.
3) We should hope that Utah remains undefeated until they play us. I am starting to think that that sort of thing might matter, and ending the season with wins over UDFG and Utah would help us, especially if both are in the top-10.
4) I guess we are rooting for Oklahoma State to upset Baylor and TCU, though would they leapfrog us if they did?
5) Jim Harbaugh can help us.

meh.
at first I was bothered by ND being #5, but now I just want them to stay up there so they can pave our way into the playoff when we kick their tails on the last week of the season.
I want to see Kelly red-faced and going ballistic on his own sidelines

My feelings as well.....we want/need plenty of chaos.

I was thinking about that too. Do we want multiple one-loss SEC teams, with two of them sneaking in, or would we prefer one of the teams to run roughshod and give everyone else two losses. I know people are talking about the case where Ole Miss could be their champ with 2 losses, but how likely is that really, and are we in worse shape if that almost-but-not-quite happens. If the world we live in more or less dictates an SEC team makes it, would we prefer that guy to be undefeated and knocked down the others in the process.
Re: Playoff rankings -
French Rage - 11-03-2015
And as for the Big12, if we can't have chaos, do we want a cycle (Baylor beats TCU beat OSU beats Baylor, or vice versa). If one team sweeps the others, it may be undefeated and have a nice last month. If there's a cycle, no one's clearly better, and the committee might feel safer picking someone else (who clearly won their conference)?
Re: Playoff rankings -
dabigv13 - 11-03-2015
I think the SEC champ beats us for a spot no matter how many losses they have, but a 2nd SEC team with a loss doesn't beat us out, so it almost doesn't really matter what happens in the SEC. We need to take the spot of the ACC or one of the Bigs. So, FSU beating Clemson and then losing to Florida would be great. The Big 12 teams each getting a win over the other with none ending up undefeated would be nice, but even then I have a hard time envisioning a two loss Big 12 champ and a one loss champ could still take a spot over us. The Big 10, I suppose Iowa getting a loss then beating another team in the Champ game would be nice (legends? leaders?), but very unlikely. Michigan beating tOSU who then beats Michigan State would be good, but even then raises the prospect of a strong one loss Big 10 team.
Pray for chaos. Almost seems like the ACC is our best hope (go Carolina teams?).

Some quick thoughts after digesting this a bit...
- Stanford gets to play the now #5 ranked team and likely the now #12
- Notre Dame will likely be ranked in the Top 4 when Stanford plays them
- The committee seems to like wins against teams over .500, and Stanford could have quite a few of those this year
USC, Washington State, UCLA, Oregon, Notre Dame, Utah, and possibly Ca.l and UW are all teams that could fit that bill. So more than half of Stanford's wins (EIGHT) could be against teams over .500, and its only loss could be to a team ranked in the Top 25.
Then beating what will likely be a Top 4 team in Notre Dame, would make Stanford a lock for the playoff.

Under Stanford Control, Washington State, UCLA, Oregon, the University of Dead Fake Girlfriends, Utah, and possibly Ca.l and WSU are all teams that could fit that bill. So more than half of Stanford's wins (8) could be against teams over .500, and its only loss could be to a team ranked in the Top 25.

It makes them a lock to be a very strong alternate, should there be a one loss non SEC champ, but even then it could be a tossup. We don't control our own destiny...
