trickery - TrumpCard - 10-18-2015

When was the last time Stanford faked a punt or a field goal?

Back in Ernie Nevers' day.....

There was this one, but it was 18 years ago.

When was the last time we had a good QB or top ranked HS passer like we do now that is actually the FG holder? He is also on the punt team (one of those guys that calls the snaps signals so could direct snap it to him)...I say we throw it!! Well actually, as good as Ukropina has been maybe we keep it as is.  But I would love to see it.  If we can do a sweep-reverse-pitch back to Hogan- deep ball- no look- wrap arms around DB- catch it on his back- greatest catch in Stanford football history trickery---I think we can execute a fake FG pass or fake punt.

Generally speaking, the kickers have to be good runners for fake kicks to work. The direct snaps and roll-out throws rarely work.  Here's a really good one that Ca.l executed.

Got to say, I like Stanford in the black cleats.

If we're looking for a special teams guy who can run, we've got one.  Bailey is a very good athlete.  If he were to take over punting duties from Robinson at some point in the future, he would be a candidate to run a fake.

Re: trickery - terry - 10-18-2015

Stanford scored on a fake field goal against Oregon in 2008. Bo McNally, the holder, ran for the TD from 8 yards out. That may have been the last fake field goal we attempted.

I'm not sure about the last time Stanford tried a fake punt. I remember an unsuccessful fake punt against UCLA in 2004. The snap went to one of the blocking backs, I think Jared Newberry, who tried to run but was tackled for a loss. I don't remember right now whether we've tried a fake punt since then.

Bailey has been handling our short punts, so he's already out there in some punting situations.

Thanks, Terry.  You have a terrific memory.

The most unexpected and exciting fake field goal I've seen is the following, which I happened to see in person. (Georgia-Vanderbilt 2013)
Why don't we ever do that kind of stuff?? even if it didn't work it'd be incredibly entertaining

Last fake punt I recall was in the Orange Bowl vs. Va Tech, January 4th, 2011.  First quarter.  It was fourth and short, and IIRC, Jeremy Stewart was lined up as a blocking back and took the snap.  He was stuffed.
Otherwise, that was a very fun day in Miami for me and everyone else wearing Stanford red.

We ran a successful fake punt against Oregon State in 2006.  Of course, the other positive memorable things from that season can be counted on one hand.....

I checked the play-by-play and found the successful fake punt against Oregon State in 2006. Jay Ottovegio ran for 11 yards and a first down. So, until someone else can remember something more recent, that may have been our last successful fake punt.

At this point, it appears that the attempt mentioned above in the Orange Bowl was our last attempted fake punt. According to the play-by-play, Chike Amajoyi carried the ball. He lost a yard.

I did not remember either one of those. Good catches.

I remember that fake field goal pretty vividly (luckily not the end of that game...), but I can't recall any since then.  Of course, that was a little more significant because it worked and it was a touchdown.  I do keep that having Lloyd as our holder would help our chances of running one successfully.  He should be able to run or throw pretty decently.
