Women's team or men's team? :p

Re: Palo Alto culinary notes - M T - 10-18-2015

Along these lines, about a month ago, about 6 of the MBB team was eating dinner next door at Armadillo Willy's (Los Altos) late. When I left I think they were the last ones there.  IIRC, it was a weekend, so they would have showed up about the same time, about 9:40PM.

Makes me kind of miss the Palo Alto/Los Altos area.

I'm pretty sure that Ming's is defunct :(, but my family still loves my pathetically I am not worthy version of their Chinese chicken salad....

Stymie -Mings is just undergoing a major renovation - the owners of Mings own their real estate and are building a hotel that will include their restaurant.

Ming's isn't open right now?!  That's "merciless!"

I had dinner at Ming's once following a bike ride that included passes by the Duck Pond and the Googleplex.  The food was well above average but not unforgettable.  Surprised to learn about it boarding up though.

Re: Palo Alto culinary notes - fullmetal - 10-19-2015

Armadillo Willy's is a poor substitute for barbeque.

Re: Palo Alto culinary notes - Trevmiesterj - 10-19-2015

I was in town for the Arizona game and brought my family for a quickish lunch at Sushirrito on University as I was curious about the hype.  The line moved quickly but from what I gathered is always forming.

The popular Sumo Crunch (Shrimp Tempura, Surimi Crab, Shaved Cabbage, Cucumber, Ginger Guac, Red Tempura Flakes) didn't live up to the hype and the Porkivore was dismissed by my meat loving 12 year old son, but the Salmon Samba (Oven-Baked Agave-Soy Salmon, Tempura Asparagus, Namasu Cucumber, Green Leaf Lettuce, Ginger Guac, Pepitas, Wasabi Dust Teri-Mayonesa) was very good and got passed around the table before it vanished.

All in all not bad although some of the rolls were a bit bland; certainly doable for a quick worker bee lunch.  I expect we will see clones of this concept pop up all over the place.

historical note RE Ming's - FrankO - 10-19-2015

After Jim won the Voldemort and we beat Ohio St in the RoseBowl, Ming's had a sign up in front reading 'Jim Plunkett Eats Here Free'... of course now a no-no under NCAA rules for him to eat free...

at that time Ming's was a BIG advertiser and sponsor of Stanford Football and Basketball radio broadcasts.... Used to be on El Camino before moving to the baylands off Embarcadero...

their Chinese food, though fine, not quite up to Chef Chu's,  but their Dim Sum brunces are/were great...

reportedly, Ming's plans to eventually relocate/re-open in future into a 'smaller setting ... location and timing TBD'

Re: Palo Alto culinary notes - Rally - 10-19-2015

Well, after that Rose Bowl it would not have been a violation.

Guy Benjamin won a lifetime eat for free award at Victoria Station restaurants. I don't think they are around anymore either.

I don't see how the NCAA has any jurisdiction over these awards once a player graduates.

For a second there, I thought you said he got a lifetime "eat for free award at Victoria's Secret".

I didn't know they served food there.  Perhaps I'll go there to try it out.

This displaced Texan strongly disagrees.  I think it is better than most of what I get when in Austin (most often County Line & Salt Lick (because those are what friends/relatives like most), and others occasionally).  The Prime brisket is really good.

But then, I really like the flavor of well-smoked meat that is tender and a bit juicy.    Others may have different criteria.

Mings was really good in the early 1980s.  (My just-under-2-years-old daughter's recommendation when we ate there: "Buy more. Take home. Eat later."  Check that cognitive planning in your developmental charts.)  Not long after that, we weren't often eating at places like Mings.  I did drive by that intersection a week ago and the building seemed to still be there.
