He needs every vote he can get. And come on, Reggie Bush is NOT the conference's best running back in the last 100 years.

Sadly, Ernie hasn't a prayer. Nor, probably, does anyone who played more than about 20 years ago or more, not only because memories are short but because looking at stats will lead you to the younger guys every time. By today's standards Plunkett's stat would indicate he was a mediocre QB at best. Possibly the greatest rb in conference history is in jail now.ernie may deserve it, but ain't gonna happen.

If Ernie Nevers can't win, I rather hope it is OJ. And perhaps Joe Francis will be business person of the century, and Sigma Nu can be fraternity of the century, The Roski School of Art can be academic unit of the century, Joe McKnight can be student-athlete of the century, and this will be paperback of the century:

This is the only motion picture footage I could find of Nevers. It is not in a game, and is post-Stanford. I wish we had more.

The capacity crowd of 53,000 awaited anxiously in the Rose Bowl that New Years Day in 1925. Notre Dame's famed Four Horsemen were about to play Stanford. The Irish and the Horsemen won, 27-10, but no one would forget the courageous performance of Stanford fullback Ernie Nevers. Only five days after having a cast removed from a broken ankle, and with his foot bound tightly in a brace, Nevers dominated the game, setting a Rose Bowl record with 34 carries and gaining 114 yards, only 13 less than the combined total for Notre Dame's legendary backfield. And, for good measure, Nevers averaged 42 yards punting. Nevers was a block-busting back, spurred by a ferocity and pulsing competitive drive. Hall of Fame coach Glenn "Pop" Warner, who coached Nevers and the legendary Jim Thorpe picked Nevers over Thorpe as his personal choice as the "greatest football player of all time." In 1969, Nevers was named to Football's All-Time Team, which was part of college football's Centennial celebration. Nevers was Stanford's captain in 1925 when he led a 24-17 upset of arch rival California. He handled the ball on all but three plays as Stanford posted its first win over Cal in eight years.

Nevers is also the answer to the great trivia question. In 1927 Babe Ruth hit 60 HRs three off Hall of Fame pitchers. Ernie gave up 2 of those 3.Â

Sounds to me he is in the FOOTBALL Hall of Fame, but I guess that counts?

That was kind of a goofy film. It was pretty pointless. Don't get me wrong, 81alum, I appreciate your having posted it, and I watched it in its entirety. I just kept thinking to myself, "What is the director telling Nevers he wants him to do?" "What is the purpose of this film?" "What must Nevers be thinking to himself as he goes through these moves?" "Who is that little boy and why is he in this?"
Two other things occur to me. During the film it indicated that in one certain year Nevers's Eskimos (he went from Indians at Stanford to Eskimos as a pro - something consistent in that) played 29 games, 28 of which were away games. Man that's tough! But it gave their overall record as something like 10-7-3. What's up with that? The other thing was - who is this Curtis Nelson guy and why on earth would I want to contact him through his manager?
Anyway, thanks, 81alum. All in all a very interesting clip.

That's why it's a really hard trivia question.

I had many of those thoughts, too. I presume that the film was a very early home video. Was he married? Did his wife take the movie? Was that his son holding the ball? Kodak introduced 16mm "safety film" for the non professional market in 1923. Only a small number of relatively wealthy people would have been using it to take home movies. It would have been cutting edge stuff that someone with a brand new professional football contract might have purchased. There are some biographies of Nevers so we could probably read more and answer some of these questions.
As silly as the movie is, it does show a certain grace of movement.

You're absolutely right about that. I was kinda struck by that. Matt Williams used to do a Babe Ruth imitation derived from old movie footage of the Bambino. Part of what made it hilarious was his incorporation of the sped up nature of that old film technology. For whatever reason, that video didn't seem to have that feel.

The second clip, after the film ends, is the Cardinal/Bears game 1929, where he scored all 40 pts. T diols, but there it is, the game footage you couldn't find :)

You mean this? He was coach and fullback for Chicago in 1929, but I could not tell teams or players when trying to watch this. Perhaps I should look more closely....

That's the one. Real fun to watch, isn't it? Okay no, but pr sum ably he's one of the players. I don't think that game footage is going to garner a lot of votes. Man, though, what an athlete! We haven't had a running back as good as him since . . . Never.
