No John Glenn became Ted Williams wing man after the crash.
The famous WW2 and Korean War pilot who helped Ted down was a Yankkee baseball player who when to Lowell HS
in SF He is????

Well, Glenn had a different story (from MLB.com)
“Ted flew as my wingman on about half the missions he flew in Korea,” Glenn told MLB.com. “(During his crash) he was on fire and had to belly land the plane back in. He slid it in on the belly. It came up the runway about 1,500 feet before he was able to jump out and run off the wingtip."
Funny thing about the past--it's all based on someone's memory.

Second oldest is the Westminster Dog Show, started in 1876. Belmont Stakes is older than the Kentucky Derby (started in 1867) but they had a hiatus from 1911-12. The Preakness started in 1873, but had a hiatus from 1891 to 1893. The Kentucky Derby never had a hiatus, not during the World Wars, not during COVID, not during anti-gambling legislation.
For the very oldest, think domestic and aquatic.

Wasn’t the question about “annual” events?
The America’s Cup has many long multi-year breaks and even now is competed every 3/4 years. If we’re disqualifying the Preakness and Belmont for missing two years then what are we doing with the ACs 19 and 17 year gaps?
