The flexibility to drop a class or take class N/NP was useful for me. It was a good way to sample more subjects and get a better feeling for profs in the departments that interested me. I didn't end up using either option too often, but it allowed me to be a bit more fearless in choosing classes.

Agreed. That choice allowed this poli sci and drama major to take a couple of physics classes--no way that I could keep up 9after all, there were numbers involved <shudder>, but I was fascinated by the material.

Never been a big believer in one game affecting recruiting that much, but with ND and Northwestern laying eggs and given our performance, it couldn't have hurt with Swann and McCullough.
Pat Fitzgerald is going to have a tough time now, but knowing him I'm sure he will come up with something negative to say about us.

Looking at how the 2016 class closes out, based on what I can gather, it's looking like this:
Lock
DL Schaffer
DL Swann
LB McCullough
Possible
WR Stewart
WR Crawford
ATH Robertson
OL Powell
ATH Croom
WR Sanders
No chance
ATH Brandon Burton
CB David Long
Robertson still says Stanford leads and we're a month from signing day. He'd be a lock but people here think admissions status is an issue. I don't get the sense it is an issue for Schaffer, Swann, and McCullough.
I don't think Stanford gets both Stewart and Crawford. They may not get either, but Michigan is after both, and it seems they want Stewart as a hedge against losing Crawford, and EUTM will only take one between the two anyway.
Powell seems the most likely of the possibles because Stanford needs another OL this class and he seems the only option after Herbig. There are five WR options among Stewart, Crawford, Robertson, Croom, and Sanders.

WR recruiting certainly has been challenging, but WR development has been pretty good. Cajuste was a solid 3-star recruit had some decent offers at TE, but I don't think many programs were interested in giving him a shot at WR. Rector had only one reported offer besides Stanford. They didn't win any hardware because WRs just don't get that many opportunities, but they made plays when their number was called and they were very solid contributors to the offense. Owusu didn't do anything particularly notable in his first two years as a Cardinal, but he made a couple of highlight reel catches this year, and he seems to be in prime position to take his game to the next level as a senior.Â

Demetris Robertson is wearing #5 for C-Mac at the Army game. He make not make it through admissions, but at the very least he seems to think he's in the game. I'm not getting my hopes up, but it would be game changing if he comes. The evals from the first day of Army game practice suggest he may be the best player in the whole group and he's definitey the fastest. Wow!

I have no idea what Robertson's grades and test scores are, but I'm hoping the admissions office looks at him as a unique, three-dimensional talent; committed student, elite athlete, and brilliant artist, who warrants a little more leeway on academic performance than the typical student athlete if he is a little short of the typical admit's academic profile. How many guys on the football team or on campus in general have taken AP art classes?
As someone who had a C average and 800 SAT in high school and then a 3.2 GPA in college with a 1200 on the GRE and went to grad school, I know first hand that high school performance is not a 100% full-proof indicator of what one can do in college. Many young people just aren't interested in and are otherwise bored of high school, yet are gifted and talented in their own ways, and when they bother to care, they thrive. Robertson seems like the type of kid who is not only uniquely gifted in several ways, but that he would add a lot to and flourish in Stanford's culture.Â
One of the least impressive people I've ever encountered is an attorney with a JD and MBA from Harvard. And all you have to do is look at Carly Fiorina to see Stanford's screening process isn't full-proof ;)
