Or he had been leaning very strongly toward Stanford and was ready to commit with good admissions news, but instead got bad news and now needs more time to figure out his options. 

I mean, I tend to agree with you, but it can be a pretty fruitless exercise to read the tea leaves behind teenagers' decisions. :)

Some kids just like the drama of announcing on signing day. Perhaps he is one of them.

I agree reading tea leaves on recruiting decisions is often pretty fruitless, but that never stops anyone.

A Wisconsin reporter picked Schaffer to Stanford this weekend.  He would be a major pickup for the DL.  He's raw, so he's probably not the answer to the immediate depth issue on the DL, but he's a very good athlete with plus size who could develop into an all-conference level player.

Thanks for posting, TC.  I always cringe when I hear a recruit say that he wants to study business or a related field.  McCulloch says that he wants to study business marketing.  Think that Stanford has an uphill battle here.

The last few questions and answers in the interview are telling: 

"Q: Any leader right now?"  A: "No, not at all."  [Looks back at the camera as he answers.]  Classic tell.  By the way, if he does have a leader, the most logical reason to wait is Stanford admissions. 

"Q: Which program right now fits you the best academically?"  A: "Stanford."  For the poker players out there, he looked directly at the interviewer for that one.  That's notwithstanding the prior (inartful) comment that UDFG is "bar none to anybody, Stanford, 100% graduation rate."  (I think I understood those words correctly, but I'm not completely confident.) 

As for the inartful comments in the interview (including the one that OF highlighted), I'll chalk it up to nerves.  From a kid in the top 1% of his class by gpa who gave a good enough campaign speech to be elected class president, I would have expected a more coherent description of his top schools, but the camera can do funny things to people.  Note that he speaks more confidently and succinctly when he's answering closed-ended questions and knows the answer.  It's the open ended questions when he gets nervous and speeds/slurs his speech. 

As for the major and career ambitions, my gut tells me that he doesn't have a clue yet.  Most kids don't, and many of those who do will change their mind.  He knows that he wants to be successful, and he'll figure out the rest when he gets to college.

There's a big, physical WR on the board who hasn't gotten much attention.  He transferred schools this year and apparently only started playing on offense as a senior, so he's a bit under the radar.  The good news is that he has well documented interest in Stanford and he got 4 As and a B (with 2 AP classes) this semester.  Obviously, Shaw wants to land the Donald Stewarts and Nate Herbigs of the world (fingers still crossed for Stewart), but it is a nice luxury to be able to recruit guys like this one and Dylan Powell just in case.  Really nice work by the staff to line this up.

Here's a link to an interview with Jovan Swann.  Like McCulloch, he's focused on the quality of the people on Stanford's team.  Kids generally choose the school where they feel most comfortable.  For some kids, staying close to home is comfortable.  The kids who choose Stanford feel comfortable around "like-minded" peers.  Based on that common thread and based on these Scout interviews, I'm becoming more convinced that Stanford will land both of McCulloch and Swann.

Dontavious Jackson (http://247sports.com/Player/Dontavious-Jackson-37374).  Another 4-star LB recruit out of Houston.  Looks like Jackson is near to committing to Florida but also likes Texas, and McCulloch is considering both of those schools, too.  Stanford does not appear to have offered Jackson, so if the "package deal" thing is for real, we'd be out of the running.  But it seems like there is a lot of "package deal" talk every year in December and January, and those packages aren't as solid come signing day.

The "C" is a shot across the bow for Smith.  There's still time to right the ship.  That might not have been the case if admission were still pending, but I doubt that Stanford would revoke previously granted admission for one "C" at mid-year, especially without at least giving him a chance to fix the situation in his second semester.

I would never get into Stanford.  Last semester HS is difficult to focus.  I took all nonsense except Frosh English at Citrus College (which transferred.)  never occurred to me Stanford might pull acceptance.  Last week, seniors had to get teachers to sign off for graduation.  On my list:  Drivers Ed, required for graduation.  Oh shit, never thought about that.  Went to the office to ask who my teacher was, then went to find him.  I introduced myself, he checked his list, said, "I gave you a C+, is that okay?"  Man, it was a magical time.
