My guesses:

Billy Swift
Jason Schmidt
Jack Sanford finished 2nd in Cy Young voting the year I was born, 1962. Won 24 games.

That's got to be "Toothpick" Sam Jones...I didn't know he'd ever won 20. (flip, flip, look it up...) Yep, "Toothpick" Sam Jones went 21-15 for the 1959 San Francisco Giants five years after he went 14-21 for the Chicago Cubs and leading the NL in losses.

And that's not to be confused with "Sad" Sam Jones who had a 12-20 record for the Boston Red Sox in 1919 and led the AL in losses when he was with the Yankees and had a 14-21 record in 1925. Interestingly, Babe Ruth, Wally Schang and Waite Hoyt were his teammates for both seasons.

Toothpick Sam Jones is 1/8th the answer to the following trivia question: There were eight MLB pitchers who lost 20 games in a season and made their league's All Star roster that same season (only four of the eight pitched in the All Star game. One of them won it).

Toothpick Sam Jones for the Cubs is one. Who were the other seven? They included one Expo, one White Sox, one Yankee, one Colt .45.

No and no. Only one of them were really well-known, the Yankee -- whose son also played MLB. The Expo shared a name with a superhero.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2025-2026 - Mick - 10-26-2026

Mel Stottlemyre, yes. 12-20 for the 1966 Yankees, led the league in losses, also led the league in losses six years later when he went 16-18. But he won 20 games three other years, finishing 164-139. So the man could pitch.

Here's the rest of the pitchers who both lost 20 games and made the All-Star team that year...and whether they actually pitched in the game. Raffensberger actually won the All Star game in 1944:

Pitcher           Year   Team                  W–L  Pitched in All-Star Game?
Hugh Mulcahy      1940   Phillies             13–22      No
Eddie Smith       1942   White Sox             7–20      No
Ken Raffensberger 1944   Phillies             13–20     Yes
Bob Rush          1950   Cubs                 13–20      No
Sam Jones         1955   Cubs                 14–20     Yes
Turk Farrell      1962   Houston Colt .45s    10–20     Yes
Mel Stottlemyre   1966   Yankees              12–20     Yes
Steve Rogers      1974   Expos                15–22      No

In the history of the NY and SF Giants only 3 players have hit 50 or more HRs in a season. Of course two are easy hope the 3rd is harder

The NBA lottery began in 1985. In that period of time, just four NBA rookies scored 85+ points and secured 35+ rebounds in their first four games.

The first three are not only in the NBA Hall of Fame, each were named by Commissioner Stern as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History (so named by a panel of players, coaches, GMs and the media).

The fourth is a rookie this year.

Name the four players.

For the old-timers, I'll go with Wilt the Stilt, Kareem & Elvin Hayes.

AFAIK, Lendeborg for the Dubs has been tearing it up this season. Sadly, Ebuka's barely gotten PT so far.

Lendeborg is the individual player who satisfies the 85 points/35 rebounds in four games.

As for the other three, while I'm sure they met the metric, they started before the lottery system began in 1985.

Robinson, Ewing, Lendeborg are all correct. The fourth was Shaquille O'Neal.

Duncan came pretty close. 46 rebounds his first four games, and 62 points.

Wilt, Kareem, and Elvin would have satisfied the metric. In their first four games, their totals were (along with Bill Russell, because I was curious)

                     Points     Rebounds
Wilt Chamberlain       150       130
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar    107        62
Elvin Hayes            106        65
Bill Russell            32        76

Who was the only Brewer on their 26 man World Series roster that did not make a single appearance in any one of the five games?

I'm going to guess -- and this is just a guess based on the nature of the question -- that the answer is former San Francisco Giant, Kyle Harrison. BTW, and FWLIW, Harrison went 11-5 on the season with 141 strikeouts in 115 2/3 innings. ERA was exactly league average at 4.20. 0.5 WAR. But he had a 2.79 ERA through 21 starts, then was shelled in his last four outings.
