There are eight members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame born in foreign countries. Who and for extra credit, what are the countries?

Jan Stenerud, Norway
Morten Andersen, Denmark

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Mick - 01-26-2023

Nagurski was born in Canada.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 01-26-2023

That’s three however must be 9 as Phogge left off Andersen

Yup, A Rod is the only member of the 3000 hit/500 HR club whose 3000th hit was a HR.  Jeter and Wade Boggs were the other two guys whose 3000th hit was a HR, but Jeter hit 260 HR and Boggs only hit 118.

The other 3000/500 guys were Rafael Palmeiro (3000th hit was a double), Hank Aaron, Albert Pujols, Willie Mays, Eddie Murray, and Miguel Cabrera (all singles).

Which guys in the 3000 hit club are not in the HoF?

RE: Eligible but non-HOF 3000 hit players.

Gotta be Pete Rose and the steroid guys, right?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BostonCard - 01-26-2023

Yes on Pete Rose, as well as Rafael Palmeiro (presumably because of steroids).  But there are also a bunch of guys who are not eligible yet (hasn't been 10 years after their last season).  I count five players who have hit 3000 hits but aren't eligible for the HoF yet.

10 years retired? I thought it was 5 years to be HOF eligible.

Five for the NFL, 10 for MLB.

Did Ichiro get 3,000 hits?

MLB is 5 years retired

And nearly 1300 in Japan, as well. . . .

Mays 3000th was a ground ball through the left side.  I went to the game  the night before. He hit 2999 an HR to right center that night.  He was on when the Giants made their last out (Can’t remember if it was in the eighth or the ninth as I don’t remember if they won the game. But I sure remember that Home Run).

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Mick - 01-28-2023

133 players have hit a home run on their first major league at bat.  The first two were George Tebeau (Cincinnati Red Stockings) and Mike Griffin  (Baltimore Orioles), both on April 16, 1887. The last was Josh Jung of the Texas Rangers on September 9, 2022.

Trivia questions:

1) Who were the three players who hit inside-the-park home runs on their first at bat? One was a Giant.
2) Two of the 133 made the Hall of Fame, neither on the first ballot. Who were they?
3) Five of the 133 hit grand slams on their first at bats in the majors. Who were they?
4) Two of those listed above hit a grand slam on the first pitch they ever saw. One was a former Santa Clara U. player. Who were they?
5) 23 of the 133 never hit another home run again.  Which of the 133 hit the most career home runs?
6) 13 of the 133 were either Giants or A's. Name them.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - skip75 - 01-28-2023

3) I know that Bobby Bonds and Brian Dallimore (former Stanford player) hit grand slams for their first MLB hit, but don't know if either was first at bat.
4) Daniel Nava is the St.Francis/Santa Clara U player who hit a grand slam - reportedly following the advice of a RedSox broadcaster "to swing as hard as you can on the first MLB pitch you see"

1) “Boo” Lemaster
6) Will Clark (off HOF pitcher Nolan Ryan)

Hoyt Wilheim hit a HR early on and never again, maybe his first AB

I believe LeMaster was the first. It was when Candlestick had artificial turf.  He hit a looping liner to shallow center. CF raced in got caught in between, ball bounced over his head and rolled and rolled and rolled…..
